Leading 28-20 late in the first half, Bates went on a 6-0 run to close out the half, and opened the second half on a 26-8 run to turn the game into a rout.
Since 1945, Gordon's 37 points rank second only to a game against Trinity in 1949, in which the Bantams netted 36 points, as the lowest point total scored by a Bates opponent.
The Bobcats move to 4-1 on the season while Gordon dropped its third straight to fall to 2-4.
The Bobcats used balanced scoring and a harassing defense to their advantage all night as they placed four men in double figures and forced Gordon into 32 turnovers. Senior Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) led the way with 16 points in 17 minutes, making 6-of-7 shots from the floor. Sophomore Mark Brust (Duxbury, Mass.) and junior John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) had 11 apiece. Junior Thomas Deegan (Weymouth, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points.
Gordon was led by David Dempsey, who put up 16 points to go with six rebounds. Greg Walker added 12 points. Both forwards shot 6 of 10 from the floor.
A fast break layup by Austin Bentson at 17:29 of the first half put Gordon up 4-3, but Bates quickly reeled off a 14-2 run over the next 5:20 to take control of the game. Ellis came out of the gate hot for the Bobcats, and Bates also took advantage of a huge early edge in foul shots to claim their early lead.
Gordon fought back to within 20-14 on three consecutive buckets from Walker, but Bates' late run before halftime was an early sign that the game was getting away. Junior guard Kyle Philbrook (Auburn, Maine) was particularly effective on defense, picking up five steals in only 14 minutes of play. Junior Will Furbush (South Portland, Maine) scored a career-high eight points in just five minutes of action.
Bates will host Bowdoin at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the two rivals' non-conference matchup. The game can be followed via Live Stats and Live Video Webcast.
