Statesmen outlast Blue Knights 66-62 in Wendy's opener

GENESEO, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Wendy's College Classic with a 66-62 victory over Geneseo tonight. Junior forward Matt Pebole led three Statesmen in double figures with 13 points.

Tied 55-55 with just two minutes remaining, Pebole completed a traditional three-point point to put Hobart (4-1) in front for good. The hoop and the harm kick-started an 8-2 run that put the Statesmen in front 63-57 with 30 seconds left.

Nine seconds later, Matt Curry drained a three to halve the Blue Knights' deficit. Geneseo (3-1) fouled on the inbounds play sending sophomore guard Stefan Thompson to the line. He made the second of two free throws to make it a four-point lead.

With 14 seconds left, Nate Cornish was fouled while making a layup, getting the Blue Knights within two, but he missed the freebie. Hobart grabbed the rebound, but was called for traveling with 11 seconds left keeping Geneseo's hopes alive. Senior guard Mark Brucebailed the Statesmen out with suffocating defense that forced the Blue Knights to commit their final turnover of the night.

Pebole sank a pair of free throws with two seconds left to ice the victory.

Bruce and Thompson joined Pebole in double digits with 10 points apiece. First-year forward Richie Bonney added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Mike Hoy led Geneseo with a game-high 19 points.

Hobart shot just 40.4 percent from the floor, compared to 43.6 for Geneseo, but made up for it at the free throw line, making more (16) than the Blue Knights attempted (12). The Statesmen also won the battle of the boards, 38-33. Hobart also did more with its rebounds, outscoring Geneseo 14-6 in second chance points.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 3 when they battle Rochester, a 70-56 winner over St. John Fisher. Tipoff at Roberts Wesleyan is scheduled for 8 p.m.
