Toms hold off upset bid

Sophomore John Nance sank 6-of-6 free throws in the final minute and the host Tommies (5-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) used a game-closing 20-8 run over the final 9:22 to counter an upset bid by the Scots (0-4, 0-1) in UST's new Schoenecker Arena.  

Coach Steve Fritz' Tommies struggled but claimed their 47th consecutive MIAC on-campus victory.  

Junior Tommy Hannon had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists for St. Thomas.

Nance scored a career-best 14 points to help the Toms post a 31-6 advantage in bench scoring. Senior Alex Healy added 16 points.  

Sophomore Pierce Peters had 20 points, seven rebounds and five blocks for Macalester, which shot 49% from the floor and 78% from the foul line. Senior Kyle Hamblett added 18 points.  

UST shot 52% in the first half but led just 38-36 at halftime. The Toms shot just 33% in the second half, and watched a 14-5 run put Macalester ahead 58-55 with 7:36 to play.  

Hannon scored four, Peter Leslie nailed a trey and Tyler Nicolai scored his lone three points of the game to fuel an 11-1 UST run that put St. Thomas ahead to stay at 66-59.  

Mac pulled within 66-63 with 1:19 left on Andy Bowman's inside basket. Nance made both ends of a one-and-one with 57 seconds left and again sank two in a 1-and-1 chance with 35 seconds left to extend the lead back to seven.    

The Toms play four road games next week in an eight-day span starting Saturday night at Bethel.
