Maroons Win Home Opener

CHICAGO -- Tommy Sotos hit six three-point shots en route to a career-high 20-point performance as the University of Chicago defeated Hanover College 84-66 in non-conference men's basketball action Friday night at the Ratner Center.

One of six Maroons to bury at least one three-point basket, Sotos connected on six of 11 attempts. Matt Johnson and Michael Sustarsic were 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively, as Chicago made 13 of 30 (43%) for the game.

Chicago (1-1) never trailed in the contest. Back-to-back treys from Sotos capped an 11-0 run midway through the first half as the Maroons took a 28-16 lead.

Another Sotos three-pointer gave Chicago its largest lead of the half, 41-26, at the 3:43 mark, but Hanover's Grant Pangallo scored eight unanswered points to close out the first half with the Maroons on top 41-34.

The Maroons outscored Hanover (0-1) 22-12 during the first 10 minutes of the second stanza to increase their lead to 63-48. Chicago led by as many as 24 points during the game's final seven minutes.

Johnson finished with 13 points and seven assists for Chicago, while Chase Davis and Tom Williams each added 10.

Pangallo paced the Panthers with 15 points. Mike Case (14) and Mitchell Meyer (13) also finished in double figures.
