HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Cabrini men's basketball team shot 56.7 percent from the floor in the second half and boasted four scorers in double figures for the game en route to an 84-75 season-opening win against Centennial Conference opponent Haverford College on Tuesday night.

Junior guard John Boyd paced the offensive attack in his Cavaliers' debut, scoring 19 of his team-best 21 points in the second half. Boyd shot 9-for-15 from the floor overall and also pulled down six rebounds.

Sophomore guard A.J. Williams tallied a career-best 20 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field. Williams knocked down 4-of-5 three-point field goal attempts.

Senior forward Dom Farrello added 15 points, on 6-for-13 shooting, and four boards. Sophomore point guard Cory Lemons scored 12 points and handed out three assists.

Sophomore forward Brandon Carter and freshman forward Fran Rafferty chipped in with six points apiece. Freshman center Jon Miller netted four points off the bench, including two on an emphatic one-hand fastbreak flush near the end of the first half.

Behind 22 points in the first half from Haverford sophomore guard Cam Baker, Cabrini trailed at the intermission, 35-34. However, a blistering 21-8 run to open the second half proved costly for the Fords and handed the Cavaliers a 55-43 advantage at the 14:32 mark.

Boyd sparked the second half spurt, scoring nine points in the opening 3:43. Farrello also keyed the run with two steals on the defensive end that freed Boyd for uncontested lay-ins.

Haverford trimmed its deficit to six points, 63-57, with 7:36 remaining. But, back-to-back triples from Farrello and Rafferty, plus an old fashion three-point conversion from Rafferty, pushed the Cabrini cushion back to 10 points with 5:48 on the clock.

Down the stretch, the Cavaliers calmly sunk 6-of-6 free throw attempts in the final 1:05 to clinch the victory. Cabrini shot 13-of-15 from the charity stripe for the game.

The Cavaliers also benefitted from 25 points scored off of 17 Haverford turnovers. Cabrini committed just 10 giveaways in the victory.

Baker led the Fords' offense with a game-high 26 points, but was limited to just four in the second half due to foul trouble. He committed his fourth personal foul with 17:10 remaining in the contest.

Senior forward Sam Permutt paired 13 points with 15 rebounds for Haverford in the loss. Junior guard Ian Goldberg tallied 19 points, shooting 7-for-15 overall and 5-for-9 from long-range.

The Cavaliers are now 3-0 in season-opening games under third-year head coach Marcus Kahn. The victory also goes into the books as career win No. 125 for Kahn in just over eight full seasons as a head coach.

Despite being separated by just 15 minutes and six miles, tonight marked only the second meeting all-time between these two programs. The Cavaliers earned a 71-58 win in the series' first contest last season.

Cabrini (1-0) will make its 2010-11 home debut at Nerney Field House on Tuesday, Nov. 23 versus Landmark Conference opponent Drew University. Game time against the Rangers is set for 7 p.m.
