Dominican Edges Chicago In Season Opener

More news about: Dominican

Marquis Turley (Grand Rapids, Mich.) sank the front-end of a pair of free-throws with four seconds remaining to give the Dominican University men's basketball team a 74-73 win over the University of Chicago Maroons in the Stars' 2010-11 season opener.

The Stars trailed for much of the first 30 minutes of play until Turley gave Dominican just their second lead at 56-54, first since leading 3-0, with a pair of free throws 8:22 remaining.  After a three-point play by the Maroons Chase Davis put Chicago back ahead, Turley connected on a pull-up jumper to ignite an 11-4 run for Dominican and put the Stars ahead 67-61 with over 4:30 remaining.

Chicago battled back, eventually knotting the game at 73-all on a pair of free throws by Matt Johnson with :31 to play.  Dominican put the ball back in Turley's hands on the final possession and he was fouled with :04 remaining on his way to the basket.  Turley connected on the front-end of the two shot foul and Chicago's Steve Stefanou quickly called for a timeout after snagging the rebound.  Out of the timeout, Chicago threw the inbounds pass out of bounds and Turley dribbled out the clock after the Maroons' 24th turnover of the contest.

Jovan Turley (Grand Rapids, Mich.) led five players in double-figures for the Stars, pouring in 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line.  Durelle Garmon (Chicago, Ill.) added 13 points while Darrius Nelson (Michigan City, Ind.) and Kaleb Watts (Munster, Ind.) chipped in 12 apiece.  Marquis Turley added 11 points of his own.

The win marked the Stars' first-season opener victory since a 60-46 win over Blackburn College in November 2005.

Dominican will return to action on Friday, hosting the Blackburn College Beavers as part of the annual River Forest Classic hosted by Dominican and Concordia University Chicago.  Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. as game two of the doubleheader action at Dominican, with the first game of the night featuring the Concordia Chicago Cougars against the Coe College Kohawks.
