NYU is on the cusp of knocking WashU out of the top spot in the record books. The Violets won their 81st consecutive game on Friday night, winning at Case Western Reserve, and will go for the record Sunday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon.

Caroline Peper was held scoreless for the first half, but had 10 of NYU's 19 points in the third quarter, helping the No. 1-ranked Violets (19-0, 8-0 UAA) take a 59-49 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Spartans threatened in the fourth, cutting the advantage to three points, 68-65, with 2:28 left on a free throw from Emily Plachta. However, Olivia Lagao followed with a jumper and the Violets defense did not allow another point the rest of the way as NYU earned its place in the history books.

Lagao led a balanced NYU attack with 17 points. Aila Kaibara had 15, Peper finished with 13 and Zahra Alexander added 11. Full story.

NYU will head to Pittsburgh to face Carnegie Mellon, the same opponent against whom WashU broke the previous Division III record in 2000.

WashU sent Emory to its third consecutive loss and fifth loss as six games as the No. 15 Bears defeated the No. 23 Eagles 63-56. Emory is now 12-6 overall, 2-5 in UAA play. Lexy Harris led all scorers with 22 points and all rebounders with 17 for her eighth double-double of the season for the Bears, while Sidney Rogers also reached double digits in points with 17. Emory led 39-31 midway through the third before WashU went on a 13-0 run, holding the Eagles scoreless for five minutes. WashU improved to 15-4, 6-2.

Friday night men's action

Shane Regan recorded the first triple-double in University of Chicago basketball history as the top-ranked Maroon men rolled to an 88-78 road win at Rochester. The Yellowjackets (9-10, 2-6 UAA) scored the first five points of the second half to take the lead, but Chicago scored the next 12 to go up 60-51. Rochester fought back again, but UChicago (17-2, 7-1) added a fastbreak dunk by Noah Pit and a fastbreak triple by Kenah to stretch the lead back to double figures at 66-56 with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Regan finished with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds, the first in program history (assists became an official stat starting in the 1983-84 season).

A late 16-2 Mammoth run, highlighted by five points from junior Marc Garraud, pushed Amherst into the lead to clinch a 65-62 victory over No. 9 Tufts in a narrow contest at Amherst's LeFrak Gymnasium. The Mammoths led by as many as 13 late in the second half before two three-pointers from senior Scott Gyimesi helped the Jumbos reduce the gap to 56-52 with 3:09 to play. Tufts (17-4, 6-2 NESCAC) threatened to retake the lead in the final seconds as junior Dylan Reilly hit an emphatic three-pointer with 9 seconds remaining to cut Amherst's advantage to one point at 63-62. Strong defending from the Mammoths (16-5, 5-2) and two final free throws helped the Mammoths clinch the 65-62 victory. Garraud finished with 17, while freshman KJ Neville added 14.

Emory got its revenge on WashU for last Friday's loss as the No. 7 Eagles downed the No. 20 Bears in overtime, 81-72. Ben Pearce and Ethan Fauss led five Emory scorers in double figures as they tied for the team lead with 16 points each. Fauss added 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double to go along with a career-high six blocks while Pearce added nine assists as he added to his NCAA Division III lead. After a raucous dunk by Harris Jackson, Pearce made one of two foul shots in the final seconds of the game to send the contest to overtime. Jackson opened the overtime session with his third three-pointer of the evening before a six-point swing from Harris gave the Eagles a 77-72 lead with 1:13 remaining. Following the individual run by Harris, Fauss and Pearce proceeded to go 4-for-4 at the line over the final minutes of the contest to seal the nine-point win.

Jack Plesser scored a career-high 37 points to lead Union to an 80-62 victory over Skidmore in a Liberty League matchup. The win keeps Union (16-4, 11-2 LL) in a three-way tie atop the conference standings with five games remaining and also assures the Garnet Chargers of a postseason berth for a third straight season. Plesser scored the most points in a game for Union since Kevin Weckworth went for 40 against Clarkson on Jan. 12, 2018. The junior hit 14 of 22 shots from the field and went 3-for-4 from long range as well in the win. Classmate Tanner Tedesco added 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds in a well-rounded effort, while senior Christian Dufort also reached double figures with 12 points to go with a team-best seven rebounds. RPI and Vassar kept pace in the LL with wins against Hobart and Bard, respectively.
