The UW-Stevens Point athletics department announced on March 1 that it will be making a change in the leadership of its men's basketball program, as Bob Semling will no longer be the Pointers' head coach. The change will be the first for the program since Hall of Fame coach Jack Bennett retired in 2005.

The Pointers were a perennial power in the WIAC and the nation, including a national championship as recently 2015. Success hasn't been prevalent in recent years, as UWSP missed the WIAC Tournament this season for the first time in the history of the event. In addition, Semling was suspended by the university, and the NCAA eventually levied a show-cause order against him for violations which occurred from 2011 through 2015.

Under Semling, UW-Stevens Point won two national championships, six WIAC regular season titles and six WIAC tournament championships. Semling finished with a record of 332-139, a winning percentage of .705.
