Tuesday: American top 40s

Four players scored 40 points and a fifth had a triple-double on Tuesday night while Wartburg improved to 5-0, Brandeis slowed Mass-Dartmouth and the NJAC began conference play. 

Alex Carlisle dropped 46 points on Roger Williams, and Wheaton (Mass.) held off the Hawks, 85-83, with its fourth consecutive 50-percent shooting performance. Carlisle set a new single-game scoring record for the Lyons and also led them in rebounds (nine) and assists (three). Wheaton shot 56 percent as a team (37 for 66).

St. John Fisher's Daniel Cook also set a new program record with his 47-point performance in the Cardinals' 107-98 win over Buffalo State. Cook shot 17 for 23 from the field and 13 for 22 from the foul line in 39 minutes for St. John Fisher (4-2), which won its fourth straight. Sheldon Adams had 30 points for the Bengals (0-4).

Maine-Farmington's Terion Moss followed up his 48-point explosion against Southern Maine with 46 more against St. Joseph's (Maine), and the Beavers beat the Monks, 92-82. Moss, who is averaging just under 33 points per game, hit seven 3-pointers and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the foul line. 

Carthage got 40 points from Tyler Guest and a triple-double from Fillip Bulatovic, and the Firebirds flew past Greenville, 138-129. Bulatovic posted 29 points, 16 rebounds and 15 assists and Carthage made 54 field goals, but none from behind the arc, against the Panther's System attack.

Collin Sawyer scored 24 points, including the 1000th of his career, and No. 25 Brandeis dealt Mass-Dartmouth its first loss of the season, 76-68. Sawyer's three with 8:33 to play put the Judges (2-1) in front for good. Marcus Azor just missed a triple-double for the Corsairs (6-1), racking up 15 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.

Wyatt Cook sunk the game-tying free throws at the end of regulation and then scored the first five points of overtime to lift No. 15 UW-La Crosse over Ripon, 76-75. Cook made two free throws with 48 seconds left to tie the game at 68 and then he stole the ball away from Ripon on the ensuing possession, forcing the extra period. He finished with 15 points while Ethan Anderson scored 16 in 43 minutes for UW-La Crosse (6-0).

Wartburg opened conference play with a 77-73 win at A-R-C preseason favorite Dubuque. Four Knights starters reached double figures led by Drew Olson with 20 points. Jack Molstead had a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) for Wartburg (6-0). A week after slipping against Webster, No. 18 Washington U. made sure it didn't happen again. The Bears blasted the Gorlocks 79-47 behind Jack Nolan's big night (23 points, nine rebounds, four steals, four assists).

The NJAC opened its conference season with an upset, a blowout and three teams staying unbeaten. 

Quincy Rutherford scored 32 points and Rutgers-Newark upended No. 25 New Jersey City on the Gothic Knights' court, 68-58. Rutherford went 8 for 11 from three and 6 for 6 from the foul line for the Raiders (4-1, 1-0). Stockton stayed unbeaten by crushing Rutgers-Camden, 113-56, and Rowan did the same with a 85-77 road win at TCNJ. Kean is also perfect with a 6-0 mark after taking care of Montclair State, 105-94. The Cougars had six players score double figures.

Women: Wartburg, Simpson stay perfect

The A-R-C also opened conference play on the women's side with the four unbeaten teams playing each other.

No. 6 Simpson beat Loras 85-79 in a back-and-forth battle in which the teams traded dominant quarters. The Storm outscored Loras 31-19 in the first period and then the Duhawks won the second period 20-6. The pattern continued with Simpson winning the third period (30-15) and the Duhawks the fourth (25-18). Across all four periods, Cassie Nash led the way for Simpson (3-0, 1-0 A-R-C) with 18 points. Sami Martin, who was the Region Rookie of the Year last season, paced Loras (3-1, 0-1 A-R-C) with 20 points.

Jaedon Murphy followed up her appearance on the Team of the Week with another strong performance. She scored 18 points in 33 minutes and No. 11 Wartburg dropped Dubuque, 69-58.

The rest of the games involving Top 25 teams went according to form. No. 9 DeSales got back on track with a 75-37 rout of regional rival Moravian. The Bulldogs (2-3) held the Greyhounds to 20 percent shooting (13 for 64). Messiah opened MAC Commonwealth play with a 58-42 win at home over Albright.

Jim Scheible picked up his 400th career win at Rochester and his 541st overall when the Yellowjackets stung William Smith, 82-55. Julianna Okoniewski had 15 points and nine rebounds for Rochester (5-2).
