Tuesday: Mya goodness

Mya Shannon's double-double led No. 19 DePauw past No. 22 Millikin on Tuesday night, while Centennial reps mastered the MAC favorites and Bryn Mawr equaled its win total from the prior three seasons combined. 

Shannon scored 18 points of her game-high 31 points in the second half, and DePauw held Millikin to just seven 2-point field goals in the Tigers' 71-55 win over the Big Blue. Shannon had her way with the Millikin defense, shooting 11-for-18 from the field, including four 3-pointers. She also had 11 rebounds for the Tigers (3-0) who outboarded the Big Blue, 43-27. Elyce Knudsen scored 17 points for Millikin (3-1) but the rest of the Big Blue starters combined for 15.

Gettysburg shut down MAC Commonwealth favorite Messiah 65-55, holding the sixth-ranked Falcons to 7 for 26 shooting in the second half. Christina Richson posted 20 points, and Mackenzie Szlosek and Mackenzie Tinner missed a double-double by one rebound each for the Bullets (2-1). A couple hours east, Muhlenberg knocked off No. 9 DeSales 65-61 thanks to big nights from Sara Peretti and Margaux Eripret. They combined for 36 points and 20 rebounds for the Mules (2-0) who sent crosstown rival and MAC Freedom favorite DeSales to an 0-2 start.

Another Centennial Conference team is off to an even better start. Bryn Mawr topped Penn State-Berks 49-44 to improve to 3-0. The Owls went 3-72 over the last three full seasons. Jessica Smith had 24 points and nine steals in 40 minutes for the Owls who now head into conference play where Bryn Mawr has not won a game since February 12, 2008.

Lynchburg edged N.C. Wesleyan 63-61 in a matchup of two teams receiving Top 25 votes. The Hornets (3-1) held the Battling Bishops scoreless for the final 2:45 and rode Sammi Sever's 27-point performance to victory. Catholic outscored Salisbury 22-6 in the fourth quarter and pulled away from the Sea Gulls, 66-51. Amanda Johnson scored 15 points and was perfect from the foul line (8 for 8) for the Cardinals (3-0). 

Anna Felice sent Brockport home happy by scoring 24 points in the Golden Eagles' 69-65 win at Rochester. Brockport (3-0) outrebounded the Yellowjackets (3-1), 48-38. Abbey Lawrence set a new school-record with 45 points for Case Western Reserve and the Spartans overwhelmed Waynesburg, 91-67.

Men: Corsairs make it rough on Tufts

Marcus Azor posted a triple-double and Mass-Dartmouth improved to 5-0 with a 92-71 win over No. 11 Tufts in the Jumbos' season opener. The Corsairs grabbed the lead with an 18-7 run at the end of the first half and then put the game away with a 10-0 run early in the second half. Azor racked up 24 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds for Mass-Dartmouth.  

Webster got its first win of the season and sent No. 18 Washington U. to its first loss, as the Gorlocks defeated the Bears, 72-60. Webster (1-2) scored 17 of the game's final 21 points and Wynne Brown, Jr. picked up a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds). The teams will meet again at WashU next Tuesday night.

No. 2 Yeshiva looked like it might be in danger of an upset when it led Mount St. Vincent by just three at the half. But the Maccabees outscored the Dolphins 43-14 in the second half and coasted to an 81-49 win. Eitan Halpert led the way with 27 points in 29 minutes for Yeshiva (5-0).

Williams opened its season with an overtime win over Oneonta State, 79-69. The Ephs shut out the Red Dragons (3-1) in the extra period and picked up their first win behind double-doubles for Cole Prowitt-Smith (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Nate Karren (11 points, 12 rebounds). Pratt was nearly perfect in overtime in a different way, as the Cannoneers made all but one shot in the extra period and topped Baruch, 73-70.
