Brittany Berry has been named head women’s basketball coach at Olivet, according to an announcement by Ryan Shockey, director of athletics.
Berry had been serving as interim head coach for the Comets since early January, when she replaced Zach Ingles. Olivet finished 3-7 the rest of the way in an 8-17 season.
“Brittany has been such a positive fixture in our department in her time here and she is ready for the task at hand,” said Shockey. “I am excited to see the future of Olivet College women’s basketball under her leadership and know she will do a great job with our student-athletes both on and off the court.”
Berry joined the Comets’ staff as an assistant women’s basketball coach in August 2017. In January 2019, she was tabbed to be the interim head coach. For the past 12 months, Berry has also served as the head women’s lacrosse coach.
“I would like to thank President (Steven) Corey and Ryan Shockey for giving me this opportunity and showing their confidence in me throughout the entire process,” said Berry. “I love the Olivet community and believe a strong program can be built and maintained here. It gets me excited to continue working with our current student athletes to develop a strong and winning culture. I also feel very fortunate to be surrounded by an athletic department which is filled with coaches and administrators who have taken their time to reach out and be supportive during this transition. Olivet is a wonderful place and I look forward to many years of success here!”
Prior to joining Olivet’s staff, Berry served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Hope. During the 2016-17 season, the Flying Dutch posted a 24-5 record, including a Sweet 16 appearance in the Division III NCAA Tournament. During her tenure, Berry’s duties included recruiting responsibilities, scouting reports of opposing teams, player development and on-court instruction.
Before starting her coaching career, Berry played four years of basketball for Hope. During her junior and senior seasons, she was an All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection and team captain. Berry holds four records for the Flying Dutch, including career 3-point percentage and 3-point field goals made. She also led the NCAA in 3-point shooting percentage (51 percent) during the 2012-13 season. In her four-year career at Hope, she led Hope to a 109-11 record, three MIAA titles, four NCAA tournament appearances, and a trip to the Elite Eight in 2013 and Sweet 16 in 2015.
Berry earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Hope in 2015. A native of Grand Rapids, she attended Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School, earning four varsity letters in basketball. During her final two seasons with the Cougars, she led them to a 52-2 record and the 2010 Michigan High School Athletic Association Class B title.
