No. 6 Trine edged Calvin in the first battle of the season between MIAA title contenders and No. 23 Marymount beat York (Pa.) in the first matchup between CAC title contenders. Elsewhere UW-Whitewater held off Coe and UW-Superior continued its dominance in the UMAC.

Montana Martin hit a three-pointer with five seconds left to cap Trine's comeback victory over Calvin, 50-47. With less than a minute to play in the third quarter, Ali Spayde made two free throws to give Calvin a 39-27 lead. On Trine's next possession Martin scored a three-point play and the Thunder carried that momentum into the final period. After Trine All-American Brandi Dawson made a jump shot to tie the game at 47 with 54 seconds left, Calvin came up empty on its next possession. Cassidy Williams grabbed the defensive rebound for the Thunder who called time out to set up Martin's winning shot.
Dawson scored 15 points for Trine (9-0, 3-0 MIAA). Spayde scored 17 for Calvin (4-4, 1-1 MIAA), but the teams combined for 38 turnovers versus 18 assists.
No. 8 Hope also won a nail-biter at Albion where the Flying Dutch needed two late free throws from Madison Geers and a missed three-pointer from the Britons to seal a 62-59 win. Jacquelyn Schwark had nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Hope (7-0, 3-0 MIAA).
It looks like the CAC could turn out to be a four-way tug-of-war between Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, Marymount and York (Pa.). In a meeting of the latter two teams, the Saints suffocated York in the second half and cruised to a 68-47 victory. Marymount held the Spartans to 16 second-half points and won their fourth consecutive game by 20 points.
No. 10 UW-Whitewater held off Coe 53-51 and kept its perfect record in tact. The Kohawks trimmed the Warhawks' lead to one point a couple of times in the fourth quarter, but could never pull in front. Brooke Trewyn made two free throws to extend Whitewater's lead to five with six seconds left and those ended up being the game-winning points when Coe's Jenna Lehman hit a three-pointer with four seconds left.
While Trine and Whitewater needed big shots late to win, several Top 25 teams could've won without scoring at all in the fourth quarter. Top-ranked Tufts beat the University of New England by 37. There were similar routs by No. 3 Amherst (74-30), No. 4 Wartburg (85-22), No. 10 Thomas More (86-28), No. 14 Bowdoin (75-30) and No. 17 Messiah (80-29).
Outside the Top 25, UW-Superior maintained its superiority in the UMAC by beating Minnesota-Morris 67-57. The Yellowjackets are 34-0 in UMAC regular season play since joining the conference in 2015-16. Minnesota-Morris, which finished in second place in the conference last year, dropped to 1-8 overall.
