Mitchell names new women's coach

Mitchell College named Courtney Burns, who spent the last three seasons as a Division II assistant coach, as its new head women's basketball coach.

Director of Athletics Dana Fulmer Garfield announced the hiring by release on Wednesday.

"We are happy and excited to add Courtney to our coaching staff," said Fulmer Garfield in the release. "She is a bright, young coach who has earned the respect of her peers, as well as a reputation for being a tireless recruiter. The same qualities that brought her success as a player—leadership, integrity, selflessness and a strong work ethic—have carried over into her professional life."

Burns spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Division II Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, N.H.. Before that Burns coached a season at Division II Southern Connecticut and a season at Johnson and Wales in Rhode Island.

Burns played four seasons at Rhode Island College and was a part of the Anchorwoman team that went 25-4 and won the Little East Conference title in 2011-12. She graduated from RIC with a Bachelor's degree in mathematics in 2014.

Burns replaces MaryLynn Skarzenski who returned to her alma mater Nichols College after going 57-47 in four seasons at Mitchell. 

Mitchell went 12-14, 12-6 last season.
