Stefano Trompeo, who served as coach of the New York University women's basketball team for the past four seasons and as an assistant for the previous five, resigned today.

Trompeo was an assistant to former coach Janice Quinn from 2003-04 through 2007-08, and then took over as interim head coach in November 2008, two months after Chris Kosiba was named to the interim role. Trompeo was named the Violets' full-time head coach in March 2009.

In his four seasons as head coach, Trompeo led the Violets to a 61-45 (.575) overall record, 23-33 (.411) in the UAA.

“We appreciate Stefano's efforts over the past nine years,” said Christopher Bledsoe, NYU's athletic director. “We wish him well and look forward to the next chapter for NYU women's basketball.”

In his first season as head coach, Trompeo won more games than any first-year women's basketball head coach in NYU history. The Violets went 23-5, including a 10-4 mark in the University Athletic Association, and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Championship. NYU capped the season ranked No. 14 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.

In 2009-10, Trompeo guided NYU to a 16-12 mark as the Violets captured their record seventh Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro Tournament championship.

“It has been an honor for me to coach at NYU and I thank the administration for the opportunity and the trust they showed in me as a young coach,” Trompeo said. “This is just the right time in my life to move on.”

During Trompeo's nine years with the Violets, NYU earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors twice (2004 and 2007).

Prior to arriving at NYU, Trompeo served as the head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at P.K. Yonge High School in Gainesville, Fla.

A 2003 graduate of Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management, Trompeo served as a manager and practice player for Florida's women's basketball program.
