Christopher Newport women's basketball head coach Carolyn Hunter, who led the program to the 2011 Division III Final Four, resigned on Friday, Sept. 2, six weeks before practice, according to a school release.

She will be replaced on an interim basis by Jon Walters, an associate athletic director at the school who served for 19 years as an assistant men's basketball coach under current athletic director C.J. Woollum, according to a report in the Newport News, Va. Daily Press.

Woollum told the paper he would not discuss personnel issues, but said, "I wouldn't believe anything you hear. Coach Hunter resigned. The speculation runs wild, but 99.9 (percent) is inaccurate. I wouldn't put any stock in any of the rumors you hear."
