Carnegie Mellon athletic director Susan Bassett has named Jacquie Hullah as head coach of the women’s basketball program. The former Dartmouth coach will succeed Gerri Seidl, who resigned in March after 27 years at the helm.

“Jacquie Hullah has had great success coaching at elite academic institutions. Her unique experiences in higher education make her a great leader for the Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball program,” Bassett said. “She has coached at the highest levels of college basketball, as well as in the professional game. I am confident that Jacquie will provide exceptional leadership, mentorship and teaching effectiveness for our women’s basketball student-athletes. Her commitment to education is paramount and we are thrilled to welcome her to the Carnegie Mellon family.”
Hullah began her coaching career in 1980 at Northwestern, where she spent four years as an assistant. In 1984, she was named head coach of the Dartmouth College women’s basketball program, and led the Big Green to five consecutive Ivy League titles during her nine-year tenure. In 1990, Hullah was one of nine finalists for the national Division I Coach of the Year award.

“Led by the vision and passion for excellence by Athletics Director Susan Bassett, I am excited and honored to join Carnegie Mellon University as the next head women’s basketball coach,” Hullah said. “The opportunity to build a winning tradition at a world-class university while competing in the most competitive Division III conference, the UAA, is a unique and special challenge that I eagerly embrace.”

At Dartmouth, Hullah inherited a team that posted a record of 8-15 during the 1983-84 season. By her second year, Hullah led the Big Green to a winning season and the first of five straight Ivy League crowns. From 1988-90, Dartmouth went 45-7.
Hullah coached her Dartmouth players to five Ivy League Player of the Year awards and four Rookie of the Year honors. Two of her teams received CoSIDA Academic All-American Team awards. In 1991, she was chosen as head coach of the USA Basketball Olympic Festival West Team. Hullah reached 100 victories faster than any other coach in Dartmouth history and was inducted into the college’s Coaching Hall of Fame.

In 1993, Hullah was selected as head coach of the Arizona State women’s program. She spent three years leading the Sun Devils before accepting a post with the Seattle Reign of the American Basketball League. Hullah spent two years coaching in the professional league.

Founded in 1996, the ABL closed its doors in 1999. Hullah then spent time in professional sales and marketing. In 2009, Hullah elected to return to the sidelines and spent one year as an assistant with New Hampshire.
In 1978, Hullah earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education at Cal State Fullerton, where she played basketball. She received a master’s degree in physical education from Penn State.

“My first priority is to focus on developing the talents of our current players and to lead them towards the attainment of their highest goals.  I look forward to sharing with prospective scholar-athletes the limitless possibilities that an education from Carnegie Mellon University has to offer them,” Hullah said.
