The Gary (Ind.) Steelheads took the two-time Division III scoring champion in guard Willie Chandler of Misericordia as their first pick in the 18th annual Continental Basketball Association draft on Sept. 16.

The fifth pick of the first round, the 6-5 Chandler is the second-leading scorer in Division III history. He was the four-time Player of the Year in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference and a D3hoops.com All-American.

"We had a good draft and I think it was one of the deepest drafts in years," Steelheads head coach Duane Ticknor said.

Chandler shot 41% from the floor and 36% from 3-point range for the Pennsylvania Valley Dawgs of the USBL this past spring, averaging 9.4 points per game.

Division III alumnus Andy Panko (Lebanon Valley) averaged 22.8 points and 8.4 rebounds this past season for the CBA's Dakota Wizards.
