Pair of Final Four assistants land head coaching jobs

Williams assistant men's coach Devin Gotham has accepted the head coach position at Massachusetts College, while Gustavus Adolphus assistant Mike Boschee will take over at Central, in moves announced May 1.

Gotham served as Dave Paulsen's top assistant coach for the past three years. Over that time the Ephs extended their streak of 20-win seasons to 11 and made two consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. This past season the Ephs became the first New England team to win the Division III national championship, edging Gustavus Adolphus 67-65 in Salem, Va.

Gotham, 27, replaces Darryl Skeeter, who led the Trailblazers to a 2-23 overall record this past winter, 1-11 MASCAC. Athletic director Scott Nichols said, “Devin has great experiences, namely at Williams as they won the national championship this past season. He knows what it takes to compete at a high level.”

Boschee replaces Dan Mason, who resigned in March following a six-year stint.

A graduate of Division II North Dakota, Boschee was an all-North Central Conference and all-region player. He served as captain of the 1990 North Dakota squad that finished third in the NCAA Division II tournament. Boschee earned his master's degree from Northern State (N.D.) and served as a graduate assistant coach for a team that reached the NAIA national championship game.

Since 1993, Boschee has been the assistant coach at Gustavus Adolphus, and carries the title of defensive coordinator. The Golden Gusties have posted a 221-83 record in that span, and finished second in the Division III NCAA Tournament in March. Gustavus Adolphus has made seven NCAA playoff appearances in the past eight years, reaching the final 16 five times.

“Mike has a really strong basketball background,” said athletic director Al Dorenkamp. “He was a player in a very successful program and participated in national tournaments. As a coach, he's always been involved with successful programs as well. That's exciting to us.”

Boschee is eager to get started.

“I'm really excited about coming to Central,” he said. “I'm excited about becoming a part of the college staff and trying to get Central basketball to the point where people are excited about it, too.”
