It isn't difficult to take notice of the strides Andre Simon has made during his basketball career at Randolph-Macon.

He scored only 14 points as a freshman, pushed that total to 324 as a sophomore and finished with 369 points a year ago. He averaged 11.9 points per game last year, his second straight season in double figures.

Simon is even better this season.

In 15 starts, the 6-4 senior forward out of Newport News, Va., is the team's leading scorer at 15.1 points per outing. He is also pulling down 7.7 rebounds per game and has racked up 17 steals. His efforts have helped catapult the Yellow Jackets into contention for a second consecutive Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship.

When Simon was asked what improvements he has made to his game, he talked about the intensity he brings to the gym and the work he put in during the offseason to be ready to make the most of his senior season.

"Things have gone well," Simon said. "I've been more aggressive this year and my teammates have a lot of trust in me. I also had the opportunity to learn a lot from some great players here."

And about the offseason?

I worked a lot on being able to go left more," Simon said. "I don't want to be a one-dimensional player and I put in the work to help me be the best player I could be this season."

Simon played at Menchville High School and an honorable mention all-district selection two times during his career. He also played two years of football. But basketball was his game, and while he said he considered a few other options coming out of high school, including the possibility of going to a prep school first, he chose to stay in his home state and play for the Yellow Jackets.

"The game was definitely a lot faster and a lot more physical than high school," Simon said. "It took some time to make the adjustment, but I learned that to be successful you had to be ready to play every night, and you had to play hard."

What helped Simon in the transition was his ability to be successful in the classroom as well. He was a member of the National Honor Society and an honor roll student in high school. He has maintained those high standards for himself at Randolph-Macon and his intelligence in the classroom has paid off on the court as well.

"It's all about managing time and making sure you take care of things off the court. It's just as important as what you do on the court," Simon said. "I think learning to be patient and let things come to you has helped me in both class and in basketball. It's helped me to stay focused and be successful at both."

Success is what the Yellow Jackets have been all about. They are 11-4 overall and are in a tie for first place in the conference with Virginia Wesleyan and Guilford.

No one is looking ahead, though, to a championship just yet. Because the league is so competitive, Simon said it's easy to stay focused on the task at hand.

"Our conference is very tough and we can't go into a game just expecting to win. We have to be ready to play every night," Simon said. "We only focus on the game in front of us and our coaches do a good job of preparing us to play."

Randolph-Macon was 21-10 a year ago and advanced to the Sweet 16. The Yellow Jackets are poised for another tournament run this year behind a balanced attack where seven players have led the team in scoring during a game at some point this season.

Connor Sullivan has hit 27 3-pointers and is averaging 12.6 points per outing. Joe Hassell is clicking for 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He has also blocked 12 shots. Marcus Badger is averaging 10.1 points per outing and has dished out 62 assists. The Yellow Jackets have three other players averaging at least six points per outing and average 80.9 points per outing as a team.

"There isn't pressure on one guy to step up," Simon said. "We know we can count on each other and we play very well together as a team. It's played a big part in our success."

So has leadership.

"I try to lead by example by playing hard in every game and showing the younger players what you have to do be ready to play well at this level," Simon said.

Simon is confident the Yellow Jackets can stay on course for a conference title and NCAA tournament berth if they remained focus and continue to make strides as the season rolls on.

He would love to add a third ODAC title to his list of accomplishments and play in the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

No matter how it all plays out, he is thankful he had a chance to play college basketball.

"It's definitely been a blessing," Simon said. "I've enjoyed playing here and have had an opportunity to be around some great players. We know how good we can be when we play up to our potential, and hopefully we can continue to play well and give ourselves a chance to be successful in the postseason.
