No. 22 Trinity (Texas) finished a strong showing at the D3hoops.com Classic, as the Tigers used 17 three-pointers to shoot past No. 21 Pomona-Pitzer, 83-62.
Tanner Brown's three-pointer sparked an 11-2 run that put Trinity (13-0) in front 56-46 midway through the second half, and Trinity's Jacob Harvey and Christian Greene took over from there. Harvey's ninth 3-pointer of the game pushed the Tigers' lead to 20 and Greene finished two rebounds short of a triple-double (13 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds). Harvey's nine 3-pointers ties the D3hoops.com Classic record held by Matt Cappelletti of North Central (Ill.).
Petyon Mullarkey scored 12 points for Pomona-Pitzer (9-1) which will face No. 4 Oswego State on finale.
No. 8 Case Western will also head home with a 2-0 record after the Spartans followed up Thursday's impressive victory over No. 4 Oswego State with a gritty 98-87 win over Clark, 98-87.
The Spartans used their stellar offense to open a 12-point halftime lead, as Case shot 54 percent from the field and hit eight of its 19 three-point attempts. The Cougars hung tough behind junior guards Isaiah Taylor and Bruce Saintilus who combined for 36 points, but the Spartans preserved their double-digit lead for most of the second half. Case guard Anthony Mazzeo wiped away any chance for a Cougar comeback when he hit a step-back three and scored a driving layup on consecutive Spartan possessions, taking their lead to 85-71.
Mazzeo finished with 30 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists for Case Western (11-0). Clark dropped to 8-3 with two hard-fought losses and will play fellow NEWMAC title contender Babson next week.
In the nightcap, Husson erased a double-digit deficit and topped Whittier, 85-71, for its second win in two days over a SCIAC foe. Whittier (2-9) looked like it might be poised for an upset win when Morgan Cox's three-pointer gave the Poets a 52-38 lead early in the second half. Husson (11-1) regrouped and ripped off an 18-4 run, tying the game at 56-all on Riles Neff's driving layup. The game remained tied until Neff scored seven straight points, putting the Eagles in front 68-61. A few minutes later, Husson forward Scott Lewis had his own 7-0 run and pushed the Eagles advantage to 12 where it remained much of the way.
Neff notched 30 points, nine rebounds and six assists in 39 minutes for Husson while Aamari Smith scored 21 points for Whittier.
In women's action, No. 10 Trinity (Texas) used a three-point barrage to hand Framingham State its first loss of the season, 83-74. Trinity guard Kylie Minter hit two 3-pointers late in the second quarter that gave the Tigers a 36-31 lead at the break. In the third quarter, Trinity hit five more 3-pointers and took a 62-48 lead into the final period. Gabriella Redford came off Framingham State's bench and hit two 3-pointers to keep the Rams close before Trinity guard Jamie Ruede drilled a back-breaking three from the left wing that put the Tigers ahead 74-67 in the closing minutes.
Ruede, Minter, Josie Napoli and A'nnika Saenz combined for 13 three-pointers for Trinity (9-4). Flannery O'Connor led Framingham State (11-1) with 17 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks.
La Verne rebounded from Thursday's loss to Rhodes and bounced Ohio Northern, 57-50, ending the Polar Bears' five-game winning streak. The teams battled to a stalemate through three quarters, with ONU taking a 41-40 lead into the final quarter. La Verne jumped in front on Naomi Jackson's three pointer, and then her teammates Alyssa Smith and Brianna Torres added two more, giving the Leopards a 49-41 lead. Smith hit another three that took the La Verne lead to 10 with 4:20 left and the Leopards hung on from there.
Ohio Northern had a 28-12 advantage on points in the paint, but La Verne (6-2) outscored the Polar Bears 33-9 from behind the arc. Chiara Brown and Jackson led five Leopards in double-figure scoring with 12 points each. Layla Dials scored a team-high 12 points for Ohio Northern (6-4).
Occidental made a successful return to the D3hoops.com Classic, as the Tigers controlled the paint in a 67-59 victory over Westminster (Mo.). Occidental seized control in the third quarter with a 13-2 run that snapped a 30-all tie. After the Blue Jays pulled within eight, Paige Yasukochi answered with a three-pointer that pushed Occidental's lead back to double digits. Westminster battled back within five points a couple of times in the fourth period, but Tigers guard Toni Thompson took over down the stretch, scoring 13 of her game-high 23 points in the final quarter.
Occidental (8-1) outscored Westminster 40-24 in the paint and outrebounded the Blue Jays 49-38. Annette Ramirez paced Westminster (4-7) with 18 points.
Those results mean that the winner of Saturday's Rhodes-Occidental matchup will be the only women's team to go 2-0 at this year's Classic.
