D3hoops Classic: Grin and bear it

LAS VEGAS - The Baruch women had a monster performance from Sheridan Taylor, while the George Fox men had two players surpass 25 points as each won their openers in the D3hoops.com Classic on Friday night at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas.

After Southwestern rallied to take the lead early in the second half on Baruch, freshman Kristen Podlovits lifted the Bearcats by connecting on four 3-pointers over the next six minutes as the Bearcats went ahead and took a commanding 53-45 lead after her fourth 3-pointer at the 8:08 mark.

Sheridan Taylor had a game-high 20 rebounds and added 16 points for the Bearcats, who improved to 8-2. Southwestern fell to 1-8. Full story and photo gallery.

In the first men's game of the tournament, George Fox forced 25 turnovers and got 54 combined points from A.J. Grant and Spencer Bolte on the way to pulling away for a 100-81 win over UW-Superior. The Yellowjackets (4-6) were led by Jarrod Peterson's 34 points and 13 rebounds.

The Bruins (8-1) were outrebounded 48-30 but turned the ball over just seven times. Full story and photo gallery.

Brendan Monteiro scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half as Bridgewater State defeated Ramapo 77-72 in the night's finale. Kyle Gibson added 16 points, while Michael Lofton chipped in with a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. 

Trailing 43-34 early in the second half, the Bears scored 11 straight points in a span of a minute and a half highlighted by three Monteiro 3-pointers to take a 45-43 lead.

After Elvonney Poole knotted the score with a layup, Brian Grossman drained another three for the Bears to make it a 48-45 game.  The Roadrunners responded with eight unanswered points, four coming from Joshua Daniell, to pull ahead 53-48 with 12:45 remaining.

Bridgewater, however, would outscore Ramapo 14-3 over the next five and a half minutes to take control of the game for good. The Roadrunners turned the ball over five times, committed four fouls and shot 1-for-6 from the floor and 1-for-5 at the line during that stretch. Full story and photo gallery.
