BW Women’s Basketball’s NCAA Tournament Run Ends in Sweet 16

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team ended its NCAA Division III Tournament run in the Sweet 16 as it fell Bowdoin College by a final score of 78-48 inside Morrell Gymnasium.

Bowdoin (28-2) advances to NCAA Tournament Elite 8 on Saturday, March 9 against Smith (Mass.) College (28-3) at 7 p.m.  BW (22-7) ends its season.

The Yellow Jackets were led by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Pataskala Watkins Memorial) as she scored 12 points

The Polar Bears had four players score in double digits led by sophomore guard Carly Davy as she scored a game-high 16 points.  Junior guard Sydney Jones contributed 15 points and senior forward Callie Godfrey chipped in 14.  Sophomore guard Maria Belardi added 11.

1st Quarter (BC, 26-8)

  • Bowdoin jumped out to an 13-0 lead on a jumper by Godfrey at the 7:18 mark
  • BW responded with a 6-0 run capped off by a three-pointer from freshman guard Maddie Ebbert (Lake Orion, Mich.) at 4:45
  • The Polar Bears answered with a 7-0 run to take a 20-6 lead when Belardi converted the traditional three-point play at the 3:47 mark
  • Bowdoin closed the quarter on 6-2 run

2nd Quarter (BC, 46-22)

  • The Yellow Jackets opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to 26-12 on a layup from junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Caely Ressler (Napoleon) at the 8:25 mark
  • The Polar Bears extended their lead to 40-22 on three-pointer by Jones at 2:20
  • Bowdoin scored the final six points of the period

3rd Quarter (BC, 64-40)

  • BW cut the lead down to 50-32 on a three-pointer by Irwin at the 5:08 mark
  • The Polar Bears outscored the Yellow Jackets 14-8 the remainder of the quarter

4th Quarter (BC, 78-48)

  • Bowdoin outscored BW 14-8 in the final quarter
