Fourth Quarter Lifts Bison Over Gordon, 105-94

WENHAM, Mass. (2/14/24) – Seniors Abrianna Vazquez and Summer Klein each scored 22 points on Wednesday night to lift the Nichols College women's basketball team to a 105-94 victory at Gordon College.

With one game remaining in the regular season, the Bison improve to .500 on the year with a 12-12 (7-8 CCC) overall record. The Fighting Scots fall to 5-19 (4-11 CCC) overall with the loss.

In addition to her 22 points, Vazquez led the Bison on the floor with eight assists, six steals and five rebounds. Respectively, Klein contributed five steals along with three assists and three rebounds. The Bison also got 12 points apiece from graduates Leandra Ortiz and Kiera Fernandes, and sophomore Adriana Romano, while freshman Adison Whitty added a season-high 11 points. The Bison finished 37-of-103 (35.9%) from the field, with 32 total points scored off the bench.

Gordon opened the scoring early in the contest with a 12-6 run following tip-off. The Bison then rattled off eight of the next ten points behind a pair of Klein threes to tie the game at 14-14, which then shifted to a 16-16 score shortly after with 4:20 left in the period. However, the Fighting Scots eventually maneuvered their way back into the lead with back-to-back baskets, resulting in a four-point, 22-18 advantage after 10 minutes.

Nichols tied the game for a third time at 25-25 to begin the second quarter but found themselves on Gordon's heels the remainder of the half. The Fighting Scots took their largest lead of 32-25 after scoring seven unanswered points on three possessions, but saw their lead lessened to just a one-possession difference with Nichols trailing 45-42 at the half.

Gordon stretched its lead back out to seven points through the opening five and a half minutes of the third quarter. However, the Bison quickly turned up the volume as a Whitty three-pointer opened up an 8-0 run, transforming a 60-53 deficit into a 61-60 lead. Through the remaining 4:30, the two teams battled through three ties and six lead changes before a final Gordon layup with ten seconds remaining made it a 73-72 ballgame.

The intensity continued into the final frame, but the advantage fully shifted in the Nichols' favor when freshman Rylee Barrieault knocked down a triple to open a 15-2 run by the Bison. For Nichols, their newfound lead grew as high as 14 points with under five minutes to play in the game, hindering Gordon's chances at a comeback. Despite the host Fighting Scots securing the final pair of baskets, the Bison secured the victory, 105-94.

The Bison will host Roger Williams University (16-8, 11-4 CCC) for their final matchup of the 2023-24 regular season this Saturday, February 17th for a 1:00 PM tipoff at the Nichols Athletic Center .
