Bison Season Ends With Quarterfinal Loss at No. 3 Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. (2/20/24) – The No. 6 seeded Nichols College women's basketball team saw their season come to an end in an 85-53 loss at No. 3 seeded Roger Williams University the CCC quarterfinal round on Monday night.

With the loss, the Bison complete the 2023-24 season with a 12-14 (7-9 CCC) record. The season goes down as the program's winningest since the 2009-10 campaign, where the program went 12-12.

"Obviously not the result we were hoping for tonight", said Head Coach Dan Nagle. "Not much went our way, and that is something we will have to learn from in the future. One tough night does not take away from the year this group had. I'm proud of this program's progress, and we will certainly be back."

In her 46th game with the Bison, graduate Kiera Fernandes needed just 16 points to surpass the 1,000-career point mark and did so with 18 points on the evening to become the 15th player in program history to join the 1,000-Point Club. Fernandes also hauled in five rebounds through 26 minutes on the floor. Senior guard Abrianna Vazquez led the scoring for Nichols with 20 points, along with three rebounds and three assists.

The Bison fell behind by a 21-6 margin in the opening frame, but eventually ignited their offense midway through the second quarter. With the score at 26-11 Hawks, Summer Klein knocked down a triple to front an 11-2 run for the Bison, which would later be capped off by back-to-back Vazquez threes to bring the score to 28-22. However, Roger Williams finished out the half strong, scoring the final five points for a 33-22 lead at halftime.

Roger Williams opened the second half with an 8-3 run to stretch their lead out to 16 points. Throughout the period, the Hawks defense limited the Bison to just 21.74 percent shooting from the field, all the while going 37.5 percent themselves at the opposite end. The Hawks led by as many as 19 points in the quarter, and finished it out with an 18-point, 55-37 lead in hand.

Through the first 5:30 of the final frame, Roger Williams outscored the Bison 20-2 to put the game out of reach. Despite Nichols finishing the contest with a 7-2 run, the Hawks emerged victorious in the end by the 85-53 final score.
