Women's Basketball falls 60-54 at #6 Scranton (Pa.) in Second Round of NCAA III Tournament

SCRANTON, Pa. — Ohio Northern saw its NCAA Tournament run come to an end with a hard-fought 60-64 loss at No. 6-ranked Scranton (Pa.) in the second round of the NCAA III Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday evening.

The Game

  • Freshman Chloee Glenn (Glandorf/Ottawa-Glandorf) led the Polar Bears with a career-high 17 points and added five rebounds.
  • Fifth-year senior All-American Brynn Serbin (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added 12 points and junior Abby Dickson (Germantown/Valley View) chipped in nine points for ONU.
  • Kaci Kranston led the Royals with 17 points.
  • Senior Kristen Luersman (Fort Jennings) scored six points and had a team-high six rebounds.
  • Northern ended the first period on an 8-0 run to grab an 18-12 lead after the first quarter.
  • ONU led 28-27 at halftime.
  • Scranton opened the third quarter with a 15-5 run to grab a 42-33 lead with 5:36 left in the third quarter.
  • But the Polar Bears stormed back with a 13-1 run to grab a 46-43 lead with 8:16 remaining in the game.
  • US would score the game's next eight points to go up 51-46 with 3:54 left.
  • Glenn answered with a basket at the 3:41 mark and Serbin made one of two free throws to get the Polar Bears within 51-49 with 2:54 to go.
  • A Royal basket with 1:41 remaining made it 53-49 and four consecutive free throws extended the lead to 57-49 with 27 seconds to go.
  • Serbin drilled a 3-pointer two seconds later, but Scranton would make 3-of-4 free throws to ice the game.
  • Ohio Northern made 20-of-53 field goals for 37.7 percent and was 6-of-21 from beyond the arc for 28.6 percent while Scranton was 20-of-51 from the floor for 39.2 percent and finished 6-of-16 on 3-pointers for 37.5 percent.
  • ONU made 8-of-12 free throws for 66.7 percent and US was 14-of-16 from the line for 87.5 percent.
  • The Royals out-rebounded the Polar Bears 32-27.

  • The Polar Bears are now 12-13 in their 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.
  • ONU is now 0-1 all-time against US.
  • Serbin ends her career as ONU's all-time leader in assists with 402 and steals with 303.
  • Serbin ranks second on the school's all-time career scoring list with 1,349 points. She ranks third all-time with 194 made 3-pointers in her career, is 10th all-time in made free throws with 229, is 12th all-time in rebounds with 593 and fourth all-time with 463 made field goals.
  • Serbin is the only women's basketball player in ONU history to tally at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists and 300 steals in her career.
  • Serbin's 12-point game marks this her 22nd game in double digits in scoring this season.
  • Luersman is now 16th in ONU history with 518 career rebounds.
  • Fourth-year head coach Mark Huelsman is now 69-30 at Ohio Northern for a winning percentage of .697.
