Nor'easters defeat Suffolk, 69-61, for seventh straight win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England received 20 points from Jordyn Franzen and wrapped up the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular season with a 69-61 victory against Suffolk University in women's basketball action Wednesday evening (Feb. 14) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

With the league slate now complete, the Nor'easters (18-6) -- winners of seven in-a-row -- stand at 13-3 in CCC contests and move a half-game ahead of Western New England in the win column [12-3], thus clinching at least a share of the regular-season title for the first time since 2017-18. The Golden Bears face last-place Wentworth on Saturday in their finale, and own the head-to-head tiebreaker versus UNE for postseason seeding.

The Rams (18-6) slip back to 11-4 in conference outings, as their seven-game unbeaten run comes to an end. Suffolk is dead even with Roger Williams at the moment in third place.

Franzen's eighth game this season of at least 20 points also came with six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Faye Veilleux added 14 points, five boards, and five steals for the hosts, and Grace Boucher chipped in with nine points and six assists. Juliana Tracey notched eight points to go with four assists and three steals, Kaylee Beyor posted seven points and seven caroms, and Gabby Soter tallied seven points.

For the visitors, Amanda DeAngelis collected a double-double of 25 points and 10 boards, as well as three blocks and three steals. Lauren Romito went for 11 points, eight rebounds, and five rejections, while Jordan Moreau tossed in 11 points with seven rebounds and four assists.

The Nor'easters trailed 14-8 after the 1st quarter, shooting just 27 percent (4-of-15) from the field, but found a rhythm in the 2nd, connecting at a 61 percent clip (11-for-18). Franzen and DeAngelis each had nine points in the frame for their respective sides as play went back and forth. The last hoop before before intermission was by Beyor and marked the 15th and final lead-change, giving UNE a 33-32 edge.

The Rams pulled level twice in the 3rd at 42-42 and 44-44, but Beyor and Tracey had answers to both instances. The margin was three (51-48) heading into the 4th, when the Nor'easters held Suffolk scoreless for more than five minutes as the spread reached 57-48. A three-pointer from Franzen with 2:33 left made it 64-54.
