Big Second Half Pushes Berry Over BSC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Berry Women's Basketball used a big second half to shut down the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern and capture an SAA road win, 69-52.

The game started slow for the Vikings as BSC had the first two baskets of the game until Kenadie Lee's steal led to a fastbreak layup for the team's first points (4-2). Just under the seven-minute mark in the first quarter, Callihan nailed a three to bring the game within one at 6-5, and Jeryn Jarrett took the lead with a jumper to flip the score and begin a very back-and-forth night for this SAA matchup.

To end the first, the score would tie twice more but the Vikings came out on top with a late free throw from Lee (16-15).

The second quarter played no differently as both teams continued to battle trying to prove themselves after a tough overtime game last weekend in The Cage.

Karlee Armstrong gave Berry their largest lead of three to start the second and remained the only Vikings scorer until the 6:30 mark. With both teams struggling to find the hoop, Lauren Ellard got a three to go and so did Jarrett (26-24).

Having a five-point advantage quickly diminished as the Panthers brought it within one and tied the game at 30 with 1:45 to go in the first half. Once again, free throws ended the period and left the team up two heading into halftime with the 32-30 advantage over BSC.

Lee kicked off the first half with a drive that led to a quick four points for her to boost her team with some momentum on her way to 8 third quarter points and being the overall leading scorer for the game with 23.

Sylvia Kahoro's three halfway through the third forced a Panthers timeout, leaving them to regroup from a strong second half performance by the Vikings.

Second leading scorer, Elly Callihan made her mark in the third reaching her 17th point with her team sharing the ball well.

Berry led by nine to start the fourth (53-44), but Birmingham-Southern refused to be put away easily. The aggressive defense by the Vikings wore down the Panthers.

With five to go in the game, Lee's triple ended the hopes of BSC when the lead shot to 12 at 60-48 and forced another second half timeout for their opponent. The Panthers never recovered from that timeout and Berry pushed for the 2-0 record over the opponent out of Birmingham.

The Vikings take on the leading SAA Majors of Millsaps on Sunday at 2:00 PM ET in Jackson, Mississippi.
