Haney Scores 25 in Loss to Berea

BEREA, Ky.­ – Ella Haney scored a season-high 25 points Tuesday night as Maryville fell to first-place Berea 78-74 at the Seabury Center in Collegiate Conference of the South action. 
 
The Scots trailed by as many as 15 points but never backed down against the Mountaineers. Trailing by 13 points with 5:54 remaining, Maryville went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes of play, putting themselves within four points with 2:58 remaining in the game.
 
The Mountaineers regained control though, pulling back ahead by eight points with 1:10 showing on the clock. But a fast break layup and a quick 3-pointer from Haney, followed by a converted three-point-play from Courtney Carruthers put the Scots within three with 19 seconds left in the game.
 
MC outscored Berea 22-15 in the fourth quarter, led by Haney who scored nine of her 25 points in the final 10 minutes of play.
 
Maryville shot a season-high 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field. For the first time this season, MC shot 40 percent or higher in all four quarters.
 
Behind Haney, Carruthers (15 points) and Emma Huskey (13) rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Scots. Maryville outrebounded Berea 42-35, led by Huskey with eight, followed by seven from Oliva Cathers and six from Haney.
 
Haney's 25-point outing marks her highest point total since Dec. 16, 2022, against Birmingham-Southern.
 
Maryville continued its strong free-throw shooting, going 11-of-14 from the charity stripe. The Scots rank first in the CCS with a mark of 71.3 percent.
 
The Mountaineers were led by LynKaylah James, who scored 34 points and recorded 18 rebounds in the contest. The sophomore was 12-of-15 from the field and 10-of-15 from the free-throw line.
 
Maryville is back in action Saturday afternoon for a matchup against Agnes Scott at the Cooper Athletic Center. Before the game, MC will take a moment to recognize its senior athletes in a pregame Senior Day celebration. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
