Conn College Falls Short in Comeback at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team suffered a 69-63 setback against Hamilton College on Sunday afternoon in a NESCAC clash at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.

Conn trailed by 14 heading into the fourth quarter but made a game of it late. The Camels cut the deficit to two with 3:12 to play but couldn't finish off the comeback.

Rebecca Oberman-Levine (Hamden, Conn.) an Addi Hunter (Saint George, Vt.) led the Camels with 12 points apiece. Oberman-Levine also added four blocks and three rebounds while Hunter tacked on five boards and four steals. Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) scored in double digits with 10 points and finished with five caroms and three steals.

Hamilton jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the early stages of the opening quarter and held the lead for the rest of the period. Arliana Torres (Toms River, N.J.) supplied five straight points for the Camels in the final moments of the stanza, and a three by Hallie O'Toole (Wilbraham, Mass.) cut the deficit to 16-14.

Oberman-Levine drilled a three-pointer to give the Camels the lead at the start of the second period. However, the Continentals countered with a 10-0 run that included seven straight points from Kendall Harris, and the hosts never trailed again.

Behind 13 first-half points from Harris, Hamilton led 32-24 at the break. O'Toole paced the Camels with six points at intermission.

Hamilton kicked off the second half with an 11-0 run to extend its margin to 43-24. Later in the quarter, Harris and Piper Seamon drilled back-to-back threes to give the Continentals their biggest lead at 52-30.

The Camels made up some ground with a 10-2 stretch in the final 3:01 of the third. O'Toole drilled her third three-pointer of the game during the spurt while Oberman-Levine, Hunter and Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) also chipped in baskets.

Conn carried the momentum into the final stanza as Burns and Xerras both buried three-pointers in the opening minute to make it an eight-point game. Later, another three by Xerras cut the deficit to 60-55, and a bucket and free throw by Hunter brought the Camels to within two.

After Harris knocked down a three to give the Continentals some breathing room, Oberman-Levine scored in the paint to make it a 63-60 game with 1:50 to go. Seamon and Oberman-Levine then traded threes in the final minute, but Hamilton sewed up the game from the free throw line.

Xerras and Oberman-Levine keyed the fourth-quarter comeback with a combined 17 points. Xerras netted all 10 of her points in the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Hamilton improved to 16-6 overall (4-4 NESCAC) with the victory. Harris led all scorers with 23 points and shot 5-for-9 from downtown.

Conn College (5-16 overall, 0-8 NESCAC) will next host Middlebury College on Friday, February 9 at 7:00 p.m.
