Second-Half Surge Helps Net UR 83-51 Victory over Brandeis

University of Rochester women's basketball finished off a season-series sweep of the Brandeis University Judges with a 32-point, 83-51 victory over the Judges on Sunday afternoon, outscoring the visitors, 42-19 in the second half.

The Judges would hang with the Yellowjackets early, taking advantage of six offensive rebounds in the first quarter to put up nine second-chance points. Katherine Vaughn answered Abby Gress' opening bucket to know the score at 2-2 before Lulu Ohm's triple put the Judges in front.

Brandeis would shoot 8-for-18 in the opening quarter, lead by as many as five after Caitlin Gresko's three at the 6:57 mark before Hannah Lindemuth scored eight-straight points, leveling the score at 13-all.

Gress would open the second quarter with a three, briefly giving the Yellowjackets a 23-20 advantage, before Brandeis answered with a pair. After Brooke Reed pulled the Judges within one, Abby Kennedy knocked down a triple to make it a two-point Brandeis lead.

Brandeis would lead again at the 5:30 mark of the second following Ohm's second three-pointer of the afternoon and Vaughn's layup, but UR would answer with a big run, and never trail the rest of the way.

Down 30-27, Gress' jumper kickstarted a 14-2 run to end the first half, as the Yellowjackets shot 6-for-11 from the floor over the final 5:27 of the first, while holding Brandeis to just 1-for-5 from the floor and forcing seven turnovers.

Kat Jenks then hit a three to give UR the lead, and Lindemuth added back-to-back layups, extending it out to six.

The Yellowjackets would take a 41-32 lead into the locker room following Frank Gomez's buzzer-beating layup and kept things rolling into the third, outscoring the Judges, 25-9 in the period to further extend their advantage.

UR shot nearly 65 percent (11-for-17) in the third, building upon their 11-point halftime lead with a 21-1 third-quarter run after Francesca Marchese opened the second-half scoring with a three.

Three-straight layups by Haley Dumiak, Callie McCulley and Gress got Rochester rolling, as the 'Jackets held Brandeis without a field goal for more than seven minutes in the third. UR also forced four turnovers while shooting 9-for-14 themselves, making it a 20-point lead following layups by Raquel Williams and Lindemuth's three.

Down 62-36, Gresko's triple at the 1:35 mark of the third briefly slowed UR's roll, but Poulakidas added two more jumpers before the end of the third, and Rochester would take a 66-41 lead into the fourth.

From the 5:30 mark of the second till just under two minutes left in the third, Rochester outscored the Judges by nearly 30 points, using a 35-6 run to turn a three-point deficit into a 26-point advantage. Over that stretch, the 'Jackets shot 15-for-25 and 3-for-7 from three, while Brandeis connected on just 2-of-16 from the floor and turned it over 12 times.

Rochester led by as many as 34 in the fourth, opening the frame with a 9-2 run, in which all nine points coming from Lindemuth and McCulley, before cruising to an 83-51 victory.

The Yellowjackets move to 10-10 (5-4 UAA) with the win, while Brandeis drops to 4-16 (0-9 UAA) with the loss.

Four 'Jackets scored in double figures, led by Lindemuth's 20 points. The graduate student shot 9-for-14 from the field, adding three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Gress added 15 points to go along with a team-high six boards, while Poulakidas scored a career-high 13 points and Williams matched her career-high with 10.

After getting outrebounded in the first, 11-6, Rochester outrebounded the Judges for the contest, 43-36. UR also outscored Brandeis, 52-16 in the paint, 30-9 off turnovers and 34-17 off the bench.

Rochester also held Brandeis to just 29.2 percent shooting while shooting a season-best 57.4 percent themselves.

UR will next host the University of Chicago in their penultimate home contest of the year, on Friday, Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. inside the Louis Alexander Palestra.
