Double-doubles galore as Nor'easters roll Nichols, 113-83

DUDLEY, Mass. -- The University of New England had four players hit double figures in points and rebounds, including a triple-double from sophomore Gabby Soter, as the Nor'easters stormed to a 113-83 road win over Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game played Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3).

The Nor'easters, who saw a 27-game win streak over the Bison end with an 88-83 defeat one month ago, won for the seventh time in their last eight starts to improve to 15-6 overall, 10-3 in conference action. Nichols now sits at 9-11 (5-7 CCC).

Jordyn Franzen finished with a career-high 35 points to go with 14 rebounds for UNE. She was 15 of 20 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from distance. Franzen's 35 points put her just five behind the single-game record established by Ruth (Gagnon) Shaw during the 1981-82 season and was the highest output since Missy Stults put up 37 in 2003.

Soter's career afternoon saw her contribute 17 points, a career-best 19 boards and 10 assists. The 19 rebounds were the highest total from a UNE player since Beth (Suggs) Carlton ripped down 22 during the 2011-12 season.

Also posting double-doubles were Faye Veilleux (19 points, 14 rebounds) and Kaylee Beyor (11 points, 13 rebounds). Veilleux added five assists and four blocked shots, while Beyor racked up her gaudy stat line in just 12 minutes of action.

Juliana Tracey was the fifth UNE player to record double digits in points, pouring in 19 on 9-for-16 shooting.

The 113 points were the most by the program since scoring 116 against Thomas College in 2008-09.

Kiera Fernandes paced Nichols with 20 points. Adrian Romano scored 15, Alyvia Smith 13 and Abrianna Vazquez 11.

The Nor'easters were in control from start to finish. Franzen and Veilleux combined for 22 first-quarter points on 10 of 12 accuracy from the floor to help UNE build a 29-20 lead after one. That cushion swelled to 25 (59-34) at intermission before the two squads combined for 59 points in the third quarter.

UNE dominated the majority of the columns on the stat sheet, topping Nichols in field goal accuracy (51.9 percent to 27.2 percent), rebounds (80-41), assists (31-15) and points in the paint (56-26). The Bison committed just seven turnovers while forcing 25 UNE miscues.
