Vikings Surge Past Birmingham-Southern in OT

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Elly CallihanSylvia Kahoro and Lauren Ellard accounted for all 12 points in overtime as Berry slipped past Birmingham-Southern 76-72 here Friday night.

The fourth quarter was the most entertaining, with the Vikings outscoring their guests 24-23 to forge a 64-64 tie at the end of regulation. BSC's Audra Putman swished a jumper as the buzzer sounded to send the game to the extra five minutes.

That capped a furious Panthers rally in the final 30 seconds after it looked like Berry had pulled away. Kahoro banked in a 3-pointer and then Callihan made a steal and sank two free throws to put the Vikings in front 62-57 with 29.7 seconds showing.

But Birmingham-Southern scored on its final three possessions to force overtime.

That's when the Vikings trio of Callihan, Kahoro and Ellard took over.

Ellard scored the first three points in impressive fashion, sinking a free throw and then grabbing the miss of her second attempt and depositing a jumper from the lane for a 67-64 lead. After the teams traded misses, Callihan swished a 3-pointer for a 70-64 Vikings cushion.

BSC answered with a 3-ball from Putman, but then Kahoro scored on back-to-back driving layups and Callihan followed with a fastbreak tally after Kenadie Lee's nifty steal and assist. Berry had its largest lead of the game 76-67 with 1:36 remaining, and the Vikings held on from there.

Head Coach Thomas Johnson says, "I am really proud of our team. We fought through adversity late and got a rough win. Our bench gave us some huge minutes. It was a great team win!"

Lee led all scorers with 20 for her sixth 20-point game of the season. Callihan finished with 17 points, five rebounds and, for the second straight game, five steals to match her career high. Kahoro scored eight points over the final 5:34 to reach double-figures with 11.

Montana Harris paced the Panthers with 18 points, followed by 17 from Sheraton Foster. B-SC shot 52 percent from the floor to Berry's 37.3, but the Panthers committed 27 turnovers to just 11 for the home side to imbalance the scoring opportunities in Berry's favor.

There were 13 ties and 13 lead changes. Birmingham-Southern led 29-28 at halftime.

The Vikings with the victory improved to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. They get get their chance at first-place Millsaps on Sunday. The Majors are 16-2 overall and 7-0 in the SAA after winning 81-57 Friday night at Oglethorpe.
