No. 5 CNU Women's Basketball Continues to Roll in 100-36 Win Over Warren Wilson

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team rolled to a 100-36 win over Warren Wilson (0-18) on Saturday afternoon, continuing a torrid pace set by the Captains (19-1) since suffering the program's first regular season loss in four years. After dropping a four-point game to SUNY New Paltz on December 29, the Captains have won seven in a row while outscoring opponents by an average of over 27 points per game.

Since the Freeman Center opened in 2000-01, the Captains have played nearly 300 home games on C.J. Woollum Court; the win on Saturday ranked in the top-five all-time in margin of victory, outpacing the Owls by 64 points to tie for the fifth largest victory since the building opened. It marked the 12th time that CNU has eclipsed the 100-point plateau at home, including the second time this season.

The dominant victory also extended the longest active home winning streak in Division III to 48 straight dating back to December 16, 2018. Across the entire landscape of the NCAA, the Captains winning roll is second only to nationally-ranked South Carolina at the Division I level with 50 straight home wins. The 48 consecutive wins is tied for the 10th longest run in Division III history, matching Marymount's spurt from 1994-97.

With 67 points against Warren Wilson, the Captains' bench led the way again on Saturday. Leading Division III in scoring, the CNU reserves finished the game with 28 made field goals in 56 attempts for 50 percent from the field exactly. The group was led by Caitlin Crump, who became the first player this season to record back-to-back double-doubles and the first CNU player to accomplish that feat since All-American Anaya Simmons went back-to-back on January 8 and 11 of last year.

Crump finished the outing with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while adding three assists, a blocked shot and two steals. She was one of four reserves to get into double figures including leading scorer Mia Wilson, with 14. Wilson knocked down five shots including one from beyond the arc and went a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line to finish off a career-high 14 points. She added five assists and was one of three players with at least five helpers in the game.

The other two were starting point guard Hailey Kellogg, who finished with five dimes and no turnovers, and junior guard Alexia Lindsey, who recorded a career-high six assists in just 13 minutes of action. In total, CNU dished out 28 assists on 42 made baskets in the win with eight different players recording multiple assists.

As a team, Christopher Newport shot 52.5 percent from the field (42-80) and buried 10 three-pointers. Katy Rader notched three of the triples in as many attempts to finish with nine points while McKenna Snively, Nicole Timko, and Crump each snapped the twine three times from deep.

Two more freshmen reached double figures for the second straight game as Elizabeth Creed had 12 and Jessica Dornak added 10. The two also combined for 14 rebounds with six caroms to Creed and eight more to Dornak, who finished just shy of a double-double for the second straight game. Creed also was a force in the paint defensively, blocking four shots for the Captains.

All but one of the 13 active players found their way into the scoring column as CNU trekked to 100 points in the win. Faith Henderson scored seven points, Camille Malagar and Alivia Giles had six, and Julia Schutz added a pair to round out the total team effort.

CNU led wire-to-wire and improved to 127-3 since the start of the 2016-17 when holding opponents to 60 points or fewer -- that includes a run of 68-1 over the last 69 games.

Christopher Newport has a break in the schedule until next Saturday, January 27 when they will welcome in Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference foe Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m.
