Nor'easters halt first-place RWU, 70-60

BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of New England finished the 4th quarter with 14 of the last 17 points to post a 70-60 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory at Roger Williams University at the Campus Rec Center on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13).

With the result, the Nor'easters (10-5, 5-2 CCC) deal the league-leading Hawks (10-5, 6-1) their first setback against a conference opponent in 23 months (32 straight wins). Since the start of the 2021-22 campaign, RWU is now 47-2 during CCC regular-season and postseason outings -- with both losses to UNE.

Faye Veilleux and Juliana Tracey combined for 21 points for the visitors in the final frame, which started at 43-41 in favor of Roger Williams. Back-to-back treys from Chloe Richardson and Elizabeth Dufrane gave the hosts their largest lead of the contest (49-45), and, after a three-point play by Tracey, Katie Galligan restored the spread (52-48) with 6:26 to go. Tracey and Veilleux accounted for UNE's next eight, and the gap was one (57-56) with 3:23 on the clock.

Veilleux scored hoops on the two ensuing trips, though, and the Nor'easters made all eight freebies in the closing 40 seconds to seal it. UNE held the Hawks to 1-of-6 shooting and three turnovers in the last 3:12; the only successful possession was a three-pointer from Dufrane with 0:34 left (64-60).

Both Veilleux and Tracey matched season highs on the day, with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Veilleux had eight points in the 1st and the 4th, while registering seven rebounds and four assists for the match. Tracey dialed up all of her points following halftime and 13 in the 4th; overall, she was 13-of-13 at the charity stripe, tying for the most makes with a perfect percentage in a game in program history. Tracey also had seven boards and three steals.

Jordyn Franzen notched a fourth straight double-double with 11 points and a game-best 12 caroms, while Grace Boucher and Sydney Jenisch added seven points apiece. UNE established a 49-34 cushion on the boards, and tallied an 18-3 advantage in second-chance points off 13 offensive rebounds. The visitors also out-scored RWU by 18 (27-9) at the line.

For the Hawks, Sophia Coppola totaled 15 points and nine rebounds. Dufrane went for 14 points, and both Richardson and Caroline Elie had 10. Galligan, who came in pacing RWU at over 16 points/game, was limited to just seven.

The matchup featured 21 lead changes, most of which occurred during a fairly even first half. UNE sat on top of the biggest margin (26-21) before settling on a 28-27 edge at the break. Roger Williams had the better of four mini-run exchanges in the 3rd (UNE 5-0, RWU 8-0, UNE 8-2, RWU 6-0) to pull ahead entering the final 10 minutes.
