Bates women's basketball powers their way to 87-62 victory over Rivier

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's basketball team never trailed on their way to an 87-62 victory over Rivier Monday evening at Alumni Gym.

Bates (12-2) powered their way to the win over Rivier (4-9) thanks to six Bobcats finishing in double figures in the scoring column. Senior captains Morgan Kennedy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and Davina Kabantu (Portland, Maine) led the way with 14 points apiece. Kennedy finished 6-8 from the floor and Kabantu was 6-7 from the field while nearly recording a double-double with nine rebounds. Sophomore Elsa Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) did finish with a double-double, her third of the season, with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Junior Alexandra Long (Newtown, Pa.) scored 13 points on 6-7 shooting, grabbed four rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked two shots, and recorded a steal. Senior Alyson Kennedy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) added 11 points, knocking down three three-pointers, and first-year Sarah Hughes (Rumson, N.J.) notched 11 points on 5-9 shooting, five rebounds, and three assists. 

The Bobcats shot 48.8% from the floor while holding the Raiders to 28.2% shooting. Lyric Grumblatt led the visitors with a game-high 24 points on 6-23 shooting. Alexa Dufries scored 13 points and Jessica Carrier added 12. 

Bates dominated the glass, grabbing 60 rebounds to Rivier's 32. 

An old-fashioned three-point play from Kabantu gave Bates a 3-0 lead with 8:08 left in the first quarter. The Raiders never caught up, however they kept it a one-to-two-possession game for a bit. The Bobcats led 16-10 at the 4:27 mark before Hughes knocked down back-to-back jumpers, extending the lead to 20-10 with 3:32 left in the opening quarter of action. 

The Bobcats held a 24-10 lead through one and led by as many as 31 points in the contest. Bates finished with 48 points in the paint to Rivier's 20. 

Bates is off to the program's best start since the 2004-05 season and the Bobcats are back in action Friday when they host Hamilton in NESCAC action at 7pm.
