No. 6 CNU Women's Basketball Captains Hit Century Mark in Win Over Cheyney University, 103-45

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The sixth-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team extended its program-record home winning streak to 45 on Friday evening as the Captains (15-1) put 100 points on the board in a win against Cheyney University (4-7), 103-45. It marks the sixth largest margin of victory since the Freeman Center opened in 2000 with a 58-point win and the 49th different program that CNU has defeated on the home floor in that stretch.

CNU continued one of the longest home court advantages in NCAA Division III history, moving into a tie for the 1989-1992 Moravian squad for 14th on the all-time list. It marks the longest run of home wins in a row at the Division III level since Thomas More capped a 64-game roll in 2017.

The victory came behind a pair of 19-point showings from the Captains as Alivia Giles poured in the game-high sum on 8-of-9 shooting while McKenna Snively buried five three-pointers on route to her season-high in the game.  All 13 active Captains scored at least three points in the game while the team shot 52.6 percent from the field (40-76).

CNU blitzed out to a hot start, scoring 21 of the first 25 points in the first quarter. The Captains scored 33 points in the opening stanza, powered primarily by 10 from Giles on 4-for-4 shooting. Mia Wilson added six points on a pair of triples and Christopher Newport knocked down 13-of-18 shots in the period for a 72.2 percent effort from the field.

The lead would grow to 34 at halftime when Giles finished out a tremendous first half with her first career three-pointer on the final play of the half to finished the first 20 minutes with 15 of her 19 points. The long-range bucket gave the Captains a 55-21 lead headed into intermission.

While the offense was cooking, the defense was equally as hot, turning over Cheyney 23 times in the first half. The Captains defense held the Wolves to just seven made field goals in the first half on 35 percent shooting.

Out of the locker room, the Captains continued to press on the gas, as five different CNU players sank three-pointers in the third quarter. Snively had a pair while Julia Schutz and Nicole Timko each finished with five points in the period including one triple each. Alexia Lindsey and Caitlin Crump rounded out the five player grouping from beyond the arc while Giles cleaned up her night with four more points.

CNU cruised to the win after shooting 50 percent in the second half (18-36) including 43.8 percent from three-point land (7-16). In the game, the Captains finished 52.6 percent (40-76) with 12 made three-pointers.

Defensively, Lindsey had a team-high six steals to go with seven points and our rebounds while Katy Rader added five steals as well. Rader was making her first start since the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 when she suffered a season-ending injury. In the appearance, Rader filled the stat sheet in just 16 minutes of action with six points, six assists, five steals, and three rebounds.

The Captains also had a tremendous day sharing the ball, dishing 26 assists on 40 made baskets. Rader had a team-high with six dimes but Camille Malagar and Mia Wilson each added five for the CNU squad. All but three Captains had at least one assist in the game.

Christopher Newport will next face off against Marymount University on Wednesday, January 10 at 6:00 p.m. at home. It will be the 42nd matchup in the all-time series as the sixth-ranked Captains take on a Saints squad that is 11-4 so far this season.
