Nicole Timko Nets Career High 21 as No. 6 CNU Women's Basketball Pulls Away at Rowan for 82-57 Win

GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Halfway through the third quarter the Rowan Profs were down just three against the sixth-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team but the Captains responded with a 22-3 run that would bulge to 35-8 before CNU held a 30-point edge with just over seven minutes left in the game. The Captains improved to 14-1 on the season with a record 38th consecutive road win after downing Rowan University (6-6) by a final score of 82-57.

A catalyst for the big second-half run was sophomore Nicole Timko, who buried five three-pointers and notched her first career 20+ point performance to lead the way offensively for the Captains. Timko had 13 of the 35 points as Christopher Newport rolled up a 30-point advantage, including three triples.

CNU closed out the fourth quarter with a tremendous defensive period, holding the home team to just nine points on 4-of-10 field goal attempts. The Captains forced six fourth quarter turnovers with five steals, wrapping up a total game effort that saw the defensive juggernaut force 26 total turnovers with 18 steals.

A total team effort, four different Captains had three steals while five more added at least one in the game. Alivia GilesCamille MalagarAlexia Lindsey, and Katy Rader led the way with three thefts apiece, helping Christopher Newport score an impressive 42 points off of turnovers.

Malagar and Giles each finished in double figures for the Captains with strong performances from the field. Malagar was 7-for-9 with 16 total points in the game including a pair of three-pointers; Giles was 5-for-9 and paired her 11 points with six rebounds.

The team balance showed up and down the scoresheet as sophomore Hailey Kellogg played just 18 minutes but managed eight points, six rebounds, and three assists, while also snagging a pair of steals. Lindsey added four points and four boards to her three-steal day, and C2C Player of the Week Hannah Kaloi poured in eight points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The wire-to-wire win for the Captains would not come easily as Rowan hung with CNU throughout the first half. Christopher Newport built a 10-point lead in the first quarter on a Malagar triple, but the Profs responded with a 10-0 run to erase the deficit early in the second. Then, again, CNU took a 10-point lead with 1:34 left in the second quarter but a small 6-2 spurt for the home team trimmed the halftime lead to just six, 37-31.

The Profs scored seven of the first eight points in the second half to again draw even with the Captains. After a pair of back-and-forth possessions, the Captains let Timko loose and the sophomore shooter blitzed by Rowan to trigger the big run. With the score 45-42 at the 5:31 mark of the third quarter, CNU went on to outscore the home team by 27 over the next eight minutes and 22 seconds of game clock. When Timko drilled her fifth triple of the game with 7:09 showing, the scoreboard favored the Captains, 80-50, and any thought of an upset bid was gone.

Faith Henderson wrapped up the scoring for CNU with a jumper off a feed from Kellogg at the 4:43 mark and the CNU defense closed out the 25-point win.

CNU shot 45.5 percent (30-66) in the game including a 39.3 percent effort (11-19) from beyond the arc. In addition to the five treys by Timko and two from Malagar, CNU got three-pointers from Kaloi, Kellogg, Rader, and Gabbi San Diego in the win.

Christopher Newport closed out a challenging eight-game road trip that lasted longer than the length of December with a 7-1 record. The impressive run gives the Captains a 14-1 overall record when they return home to the Freeman Center this Friday at 3:00 p.m. to face the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania Wolves.
