Strong First Half Pushes Vikings to Victory

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Berry Women's Basketball (4-4 overall, 1-0 SAA) defeated the Scots of Covenant College in today's non-conference road contest, 57-49.
 
Sarah Wright struck first with an opening three that secured a lead the Vikings never gave up throughout their forty minutes of play. Wright's opening bucket led to a 13-0 run for the team that motivated their defense as well.
 
The Scots were unable to score until under the three-minute mark and only posted six points for the entire quarter.
 
Lauren Ellard ended the scoring for the Vikings as she tabbed  a three and sent the game to the second quarter 16-6.
 
Points off turnovers became the key to success for Berry as they scored 23 points off of the Scots 23 turnovers for the game.
 
In the second, Berry held steady scoring 14 points for the quarter and still holding the Scots to only six points for a halftime score of 30-12 that left Covenant searching for answers.
 
After the half, leading scorer Ellie Gearing started things off right with a bucket as her team continued to apply pressure. The Scots began to find the basket in the third as they more than doubled their second quarter points with 17 as they looked to make a late comeback and diminished the lead to eleven (40-29).
 
An impressive 22 made free-throws, shooting 77% from the line for the Vikings was integral across the second half. The Scots hit four triples in the fourth as they began to gain momentum and cut the game to a possession with four minutes left.
 
Five straight points from Elly Callihan pushed the Vikings back up as they began to close the game with key free-throws for their non-conference win against the Scots.
