Elkins 22 points lifts RMC over Averett

How it Happened

  • Randolph-Macon took an early 13-7 lead after the first period. Elkins led the scoring with six points, scoring the first four points of the game. Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) nailed a three-pointer to force an Averett timeout, as the Yellow Jackets led 7-0 with 6:34 left. The Cougars scored seven of the next ten points as Emma Jones knocked down a three-pointer to cut the RMC lead to 10-7. Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) converted a lay-up, plus the foul shot with seconds left to give some room to the Lemon and Black after the first period. 
  • In the second period both defenses continued to control the pace of the game. Elkins guided the Yellow Jacket again with seven points in the period. This brought her total to 13 points for one half, along with 11 rebounds to record a first half double-double. Averett kept the game within five points the entire period and got as close as two on a Amore Kirkland pull up jumpshot with just over a minute left. RMC took a 22-19 lead into the halftime break, using great defense and contributions from inside the paint. 
  • The Lemon and Black began the third period on an 8-0 run. Miller began the period with a long three-pointer and Elkins followed it up with five points of her own for a 30-19 lead. Elkins scored nine points to lead the team in the period and Miller added seven points. Park converted on two free-throws at the end of the period to give Randolph-Macon their biggest lead of the game at 43-29.
  • Both teams scored 12 points in the final ten minutes. Kirkland scored four for the Cougars and Park scored four as well for the Yellow Jackets. Defense turned into offense as the game went for the Lemon and Black for a 58-42 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Randolph-Macon shot 36.7% from the floor, as AU knocked down only 23.5% of their shots.
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Cougars 54-to-42.
  • Elkins ended the night as the leading scorer for RMC with 22 points for a career high. The sophomore also pulled down 19 rebounds, had two steals and a block.
  • Park scored 11 points and had eight rebounds. The junior's eight rebounds tied her career high in that category. 
  • Miller scored ten points and had six rebounds in the game. 

For The Record 

  • Elkins extended her ten point or more scoring streak to eight games in a row. The Virginia native has also recorded ten points in nine out of the first ten games for the Yellow Jackets.
