Fast Start Propels Allegheny Women's Basketball Past Yellow Jackets

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny women's basketball team got out of the gates fast as they collected a 90-53 home Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory against Waynesburg Saturday (Dec. 9).
 
The Gators got out to a fast start, taking a 12-5 lead midway through the opening frame. That lead would grow to as much as 12 as Allegheny led 22-10 heading into the second quarter. The 22 points scored were the most in the opening quarter for the Gators this season. Allegheny also created eight turnovers in the ten minutes. 
 
An 11-4 run to open the second gave the Gators a 19 point lead, 34-13. Waynesburg would go on their own 8-0 run, however, Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) led the Gators down the stretch, scoring seven points to give Allegheny a 44-29 lead at the break.
 
Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led the team with 11 points in the opening half while also collecting five rebounds. Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) had 10 points while Genareo finished with nine. The Gators owned a 20-14 rebounding advantage and forced 13 turnovers. They also shot 54.1% (20-of-37) from the field.
 
The Gators' momentum carried over to the third quarter as they went on a 12-4 run to improve their lead to 56-33 midway through. For the third straight quarter, the Gators produced 22 points as they led 66-47 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Once more, the Gators got out to a quick start in the final frame with an 11-2 run. The lead grew to its highest of the game at 37 points as the Gators had their best offensive output of the day with 24 points in the frame to seal the win.
 
Inside the Box

  • Bickart finished with a season-high 18 points to go alongside eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
  • Lauer also put up 18 points with five rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block.
  • Genareo finished with 15 points, six rebounds and a career-high 10 assists.
  • Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) had 14 points with seven rebounds, five blocks and three steals.
  • Jenna Lutz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) had a career-high seven points.
  • Elly Gray (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey) also had a career-high with six points.
  • Allegheny shot 56.9% (41-of-72) for the game, a season-best.
  • The Gators forced 24 turnovers resulting in 23 points.

  • The Gators improved to 3-3 in PAC play this year.
  • Allegheny is now 13-2 against the Yellow Jackets.
  • 90 points, as well as a 56.9% field goal percentage are season-highs for the Gators.
