Hot-handed Presidents coast past Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Three Presidents scored in double figures to lead the Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team to an 82-65 victory over host Waynesburg University Wednesday evening in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

The win improves the Presidents to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in league play. The loss drops Waynesburg to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league contests.

The 82 points are a season-high total for the Presidents. A total of 10 Presidents found the scoring column in a balanced overall output. All five starters tallied at least eight points in the victory.

Leading the way was junior guard Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), who posted a near perfect performance on the court. Dryburgh made eight-of-10 field goal attempts including three-of-three attempts from beyond the arc. Dryburgh finished with 18 points and posted nine rebounds, five assists, three steals, a block and committed no turnovers in 23 minutes of play.
  
The Presidents came out firing following an 11-day layoff between games. W&J used a strong offensive start and steady flow of points to record the win over Waynesburg Wednesday evening. The Presidents made 10-of-18 field goals in the first quarter to build a 27-20 lead after 10 minutes of play. W&J then shot 57 percent in the second quarter to build a 47-38 lead into halftime.
 
It was strong defensive play that allowed W&J to pull away in the third quarter. The Presidents outpaced the Yellow Jackets by a 16-8 margin in the third stanza. W&J limited the hosts to just two made field goals in 18 tries in the third. The Red and Black recorded the first eight points of the third quarter to swell its lead to 55-38. W&J led by double digits the rest of the way. 

Both teams scored 19 points over the final 10 minutes. W&J led by as many as 21 points in the fourth. A fast-break layup by Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made it 76-55 with 3:44 remaining.
 
Dryburgh was backed by strong contributions from her fellow classmates Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) and Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area). The pair finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Bezjak and Dryburgh matched the team high with five assists apiece.

Senior center Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) added eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Loutsion finished with nine points and five boards. 

Freshman center Katie Kovalchick (Shelocta, Pa. / Indiana Area) and freshman forward Jaden Wan (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) finished with six points apiece off the bench. Senior guard Kiyanna Dowling (York, Pa./York Suburban) added five points and three boards. 
 
W&J shot 45.6 percent from the field. The Presidents converted at a 82.4 percent clip from the free throw line, as they made 14-of-17 attempts on the night. W&J posted a 49-37 advantage in rebounding and had a 15-4 advantage in second chance points. 
 
The Presidents will host Bethany College in the Salvitti Family Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 2 in their Colleges Against Cancer Purple Out game. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
