No. 3 CNU Women's Basketball Overpowers Greensboro in Opening Quarter On Route to 79-43 Win at Home

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After ten minutes of action, the third-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team was out to a 26-point lead, scored 30 points, and had a 16-4 advantage in rebounding as the Captains (7-0) swarmed the Greensboro College Pride (0-6) on Sunday afternoon on route to a 79-43 victory at the Freeman Center. Eight different CNU players got into the scoring column in the first quarter and the CNU defense held Greensboro to just 2-of-13 shooting in the dominant start.

From the opening whistle, the Captains frustrated the Greensboro offense, earning a steal on the very first possession as Camille Malagar jumped into a passing lane. She then connected on a jumper on the other end to trigger a 10-0 spurt to start that would grow to an 18-2 run through the first five minutes of action. Before the Pride got on the board, the Captains had three steals, and six points off of those giveaways including a dynamite pass from Malagar to Alivia Giles on the run to finish out a fast-break layup.

In the opening quarter, Giles led the way with eight points while McKenna Snively added a three-pointer and a fast-break layup for five points. Rookies Mia Wilson and Elizabeth Creed added long-range jumpers of their own and the fast-paced CNU attack scored 13 points off turnovers in the opening quarter.

Taking a 30-4 lead into the second stanza, the Captains would lead the game wire-to-wire. Christopher Newport took a 48-21 advantage into halftime and added to it in the third quarter, building the lead to 66-28.

The Captains coasted to a seventh straight victory behind a dominating performance from the eight reserves off the bench. Leading the way with her first career double-double was freshman Caitlin Crump as she finished with a career-high 11 points and 13 rebounds. Fellow freshman Jessica Dornak poured in a game-high 12 points, also netting her career-best, while Giles scored 10 points in just nine minutes of action to round out the double-figure scorers for CNU.

In addition to the double-double, Crump also added four assists, three steals, and two blocks for a well-rounded performance against the Pride. Dornak added seven rebounds while Creed hauled in six boards to go with seven points. The freshman class finished the game with 39 points combined between the five rookies, while adding 34 rebounds.

Christopher Newport finished out the 2023 calendar year at home as they will play the next eight games away from the Freeman Center. CNU has now won 44 straight games at home during a stretch that will span over five full years with the last loss coming in December 2018 against Messiah.

The Captains will next travel to Haverford College for a 3:00 p.m. tip on Saturday, December 2.
