Smith Seals Victory Over #20 Mary Washington

The Basics:

Score: Randolph-Macon 60, #20 Mary Washington 52

How it Happened:

  • Mary Washington took an early 6-3 lead, following a Sydney Sherman lay-up at the 8:22 mark in the first period. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 9-0 run, which was led by five straight points by Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) to give RMC a 12-6 with 3:02 remaining in the period. The run helped to give Randolph-Macon a 15-12 lead after one period.    
  • The Lemon and Black rode the hot hand from outside the three-point line to start the second period on a 15-2 run that lasted over half of the ten minutes. RMC made five-of-seven three pointers in the period, four coming during the run Morgan Miller (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) hit two back-to-back, Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and Lilly Davis (Mooresville, N.C./Mooresville) added the other two. Smith ended the second period with one of her own to total all five in the period, to jump RMC out to a 30-14 lead. 
  • The Eagles ended the final four minutes of the first half on a 11-4 run that saw Sherman account for six points and Megan Baxter total four. Both runs sent the game to the halftime break with Randolph-Macon leading 34-25. 
  • The hot shooting would cool off in the third period, when both defenses stepped up, as 11 points were scored total in the period. Baxter led the Eagles with four points and Jordan Carpenter added three points. Elkins scored the only points for the Yellow Jackets in the period, but RMC still held a 38-32 advantage going into the final regulation period. 
  • Park made a free-throw with eight seconds left to extend the Randolph-Macon lead to 47-44. Sherman converted on a wide--open three from the wing with two seconds left to tie the game up at 47-47. 
  • Baxter cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 51-50 with just under three minutes left in overtime. Smith would end up scoring the final nine points for Randolph-Macon, including clutch free-throws and lay-ups to cap off a dramatic victory 60-52.    

Inside the Numbers:

  • Randolph-Macon shot 36.4% from the floor, as UMW knocked down only 30.9% of their shots.
  • The Yellow Jackets knocked down 42.9 percent of its three-pointers (9-of-21). The Eagles only made 2-of-17 shots from behind the arc. 
  • Smith had a career high in points with 15, the freshman also added three assists and three rebounds. 
  • Miller made four of her five three point attempts to total 14 points. The sophomore also scored the most points in her career, while pulling down eight rebounds, dishing out two assists, blocking one shot and recording a steal. 
  • Elkins finished with 13 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes.

For the Record:

  • The win over nationally ranked Mary Washington was the first in the Lindsey Burke era and was the first time overall since Randolph-Macon defeated #9 Transylvania in the first round of the 2020 NCAA Tournament.
