Redlands Women's Basketball loses first game of the season

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (1-1) lost their first game of the season as they dropped a 77-60 non-conference game to LIFE Pacific University (LPU) on Wednesday evening inside Currier Gym.

The Bulldogs' defense allowed the Warriors to convert on a three in the first 13 seconds of the game, but Carly Hicks found Colbi Zorich for a jump shot and Leila Hosn converted on a layup as they led 4-3 and had not allowed a bucket in more than two minutes.

AJ Wick scored to regain the lead for Redlands and then after a good defensive stretch, Aliyah Anderson made a pair of free throws for their largest lead of the game, 8-5, with 4:11 remaining in the first.

LFU, however, would finish the final 3:54 on a 14-4 run as they took a seven-point lead into the second quarter. The four Bulldog points came from a pair of free throws from Zorich and Anderson.

The Bulldog offense started the second 10 minutes slow as they were scoreless for the first three plus minutes before Anderson again got to the line and made both. Hosn's fastbreak layup with 6:05 on the clock was the first score in the run of play since Wick's basket more than 10 minutes prior.

Redlands trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, but Hosn found Wick for a jumper and with 47 seconds left in the half, Anderson scored in the paint after grabbing the defensive rebound on the other end as the Bulldogs trailed by 11, 37-26, after 20 minutes.

Things did not start well for the Bulldogs in the third quarter as they found themselves down by 21, 49-28, with less than five minutes to play. Redlands, though, went on a 12-4 run to get within four possessions, 54-42, with 54 seconds left. The Warriors would respond with five of the final six points as the deficit was 16, 59-43, after three.

In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs got within 14 points twice, including with 3:21 to play, but LFU continued the great shooting from behind the arc as they made two more threes to close out the game.

Hosn, Anderson, and Wick all finished in double figures with 15, 14, and 13 points respectively. Hosn added a career-high seven assists while Wick and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in as many career games.

The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround as they host Concordia Chicago this Saturday, November 18 at 5:00 p.m. inside Currier.
