Big Fourth Quarter Leads #20 UMW over York

YORK, PA – The University of Mary Washington Eagles outscored the host York College Spartans 21-9 in the fourth quarter to sneak away with a 64-59 win in the championship game of the 16th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in York on Saturday. The Spartans led 50-43 heading into the fourth quarter before the 20th ranked Eagles had a big quarter to capture their first Coaches vs. Cancer title.
The Eagles improve to 3-0 while the Spartans fall to 1-1.
 
How It Happened
• The game was highly competitive from the start. The game was tied at eight just under four minutes into the game. Taylor Burda buried a three to give York an 11-8 lead. The Eagles came back to tie the game at 14 on a pair of Keagan Schwab free throws. York ended the quarter on an 8-1 run as they led 22-15 after 10 minutes of play.
• York started the second quarter by pushing their lead to nine twice with the second time coming on a Breana Grim fast break lay-up with 7:02 left in the quarter. The Eagles spent the remainder of the half out scoring York 15-6 to tie the game at 32 at the half. After the Spartans shot 57% in the first quarter, the Eagles held York to 20% shooting in the second quarter. Mary Washington outscored York 17-10 in the second stanza.
• The Eagles scored the first bucket out of the break but the Spartans went on a 9-1 spurt to take a 41-35 lead with 5:56 left in the quarter. The squads would trade bucket over the final five minutes of the quarter as York took the seven point lead to the fourth.
• After tournament MVP Jordan Carpenter opened the quarter with a bucket, the Spartans went on a 5-0 run to push the lead to ten at 55-45. Unfortunately for York, the Eagles climbed their way back into the game with a 9-0 run as they trailed 55-54 after a Sydney Sherman jumper with 3:33 left in the game. Taylor Brenneman hit a jumper to halt the run but Carpenter converted a three-point play to tie the game at 57 with 2:43 remaining. Sherman hit a pair of free throws with 1:27 left to give the Eagles a lead they wouldn't relinquish. UMW finished the game on a 7-2 run to pull away for the five-point win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 38.5% for the game including 24.2% (8-for-33) from three while they converted 11-of-16 (68.6%) from the stripe … Mary Washington shot 39.4% from the field, 5.9% (1-for-17) from three and 11-for-19 (57.9%) from the stripe … the Eagles held a 39-38 edge in rebounding … the Eagles turned the 17 Spartan turnovers into 26 points including 13 points in the decisive fourth quarter … UMW held a 26-18 edge in points in the paint … Mary Washington had 21 second chance points while York had just six.

The game against the Eagles is the first since February 26, 2020 when York knocked off the Eagles 64-51 in the CAC Semifinals in York's final year in the league … Mary Washington holds a 50-28 lead in the all-time series … the Spartans were going for their ninth Coaches vs. Cancer Classic championship … York is now 22-10 in the annual tournament … sophomore Breana Grim was named to the all-tournament team after she tallied 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 38 minutes of work … Makenna Zimmerman had 11 points, six rebounds, and a career-high seven blocked shots … the seven blocked shots are second on the single-game list for the Spartans … senior Alyssa Hocker contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists for York … the Spartan blocked a season-high 10 shots … Sydney Sherman led the Eagles with 26 points as she earned all-tournament team honors while teammate Jordan Carpenter was named the tournament MVP after 16 points and 13 rebounds in the championship game.
