No. 21 Hope downs Wisconsin-Platteville

The Hope College women's basketball team completed an unbeatable first weekend of the season.

The No. 21 ranked Flying Dutch took down their second opponent in three days with a 75-59 win over the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the Hope College Tip Off Tournament on Saturday at DeVos Fieldhouse.

On Thursday, the Flying Dutch defeated Marian University (Wis.), 90-48.

"A young group, but if you're going to be young, let's be better as we grow," said head coach Brian Morehouse. "The growth from when we started [practicing] until now is unbelievable. We had some young kids this weekend, and it is just fun to watch them have their first college experience."

Hope overcame a 24-17 deficit midway through the second quarter.

The Flying Dutch strung together a 17-2 run over seven minutes before halftime. Hope grabbed the lead for good at 25-24 behind three-point plays from sophomore Sydney Vis (Byron Center, Michigan / South Christian HS) and senior Raven Jemison (Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Kentwood) 59 seconds apart.

Hope erupted for 27 points during the third quarter and extended its lead to 61-41.

Sophomore Karsen Karlblom (Crystal Lake, Illinois / Prairie Ridge) grabbed a game-high 17 points and was named Tip Off Tournament MVP.

Vis, who chipped in 11 points, and junior Jada Garner (Midland, Michigan / H.H. Dow) joined Karlblom on the all-tournament team.

Nine different Flying Dutch scored.

Freshman Terin Maynard (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Jenison) put up 10 points off the bench and a game-high four assists.

Platteville (1-1) received 13 points from Ashley Weir and 11 from Ella Mackiewicz.

Mackiewicz made the all-tournament team along with teammate Madalyn Reichmann and Marian's Kiara Williams.

Hope returns to the court on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 17-18, by hosting a four-team tournament that includes Illinois Wesleyan University, John Carroll University (Ohio) and the University of Puget Sound (Washington).

On Friday, the Flying Dutch will face John Carroll at 5 p.m., while Illinois Wesleyan and Puget Sound meet at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Friday's winners and losers will square off at 1 and 3 p.m., with Hope playing the 3 p.m. game regardless of Friday's outcome.
