Pios Get Back into Win Column Against Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Carroll University women's basketball team outlasted the Elmhurst Bluejays after a tight first quarter, by pulling away the next two quarters on their way to an 88-49 road victory. Olivia Rangel led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Pioneers (15-7, 10-3 CCIW) hit exactly 50% of their shots, but struggled behind the arc, making only 3-12. Carroll dominated the boards, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds on their way to 42 total. After struggling to maintain possession last week, the Pios limited their turnovers to just nine on the night. Carroll forced 27 turnovers with 19 steals, generating 41 points off turnovers. The Carroll bench, led by Emilie Wizner's 11 scored 44 of the team's 88 points.
 
Carroll's first offensive possession was a three-pointer from Brooke Foster that gave them their first lead. Carroll lost the lead briefly and found themselves down 4-10 with 6:30 to go in the quarter. Natalie Palzkill scored six points in a Pioneer 12-2 run to give them the lead back. Carroll held onto the first-half lead after making 8-14 attempts at the free-throw line. Rangel kicked off her own 6-0 run in the second quarter to give Carroll a double-digit lead which they hung onto the rest of the night. Rangel shot 5-6 from the field and was perfect at the line in the second quarter, scoring 12 points.
 
Allison Thompson got the Pioneers going in the second half with three looks at the basket in three possessions. Carroll took a 56-36 lead with 5:54 left in the third on Foster free throws. Carroll's defense held Elmhurst to just nine points on 3-12 shooting with seven turnovers as the lead ballooned to 30. Chloe Halverson led the Pioneers in the fourth quarter with six points, while Katie Rohner and Anna Nielsen added four each.
 
Carroll faces Augustana College back in Van Male on Saturday, February 11 at 2 PM. The Pioneers fell to the Vikings on the road earlier this season, but Carroll still holds a one-game advantage in the CCIW standings.
