Berardelli, Dryburgh post double-doubles as Presidents roll past Barons, 77-47

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) and Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) accounted for 30 points and 25 rebounds as W&J used its strong inside game to roll past visiting Franciscan University of Steubenville by a 77-47 score Saturday afternoon at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. 

The win improves W&J to 19-2 overall and 15-1 in conference play. The loss drops Franciscan to 3-17 overall and 2-14 in the PAC. 

W&J raced out to a 27-9 lead after the first quarter before building a 42-20 lead at halftime. The Presidents outscored the Barons by a 28-20 margin in the third quarter before each team scored eight points over the final 10 minutes. 

The Presidents scored the first seven points and built the lead to 11-2 on a fastbreak layup by Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) at the 6:56 mark. The lead reached 13 after back-to-back baskets by Berardelli to make it 15-2. Later in the quarter, three-point field goals by Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) and Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) stretched the lead to 25-7 at the 2:08 mark. 

Consecutive field goals by Cherry extended W&J's lead to 35-15 midway through the second quarter. Berardelli tacked on consecutive field goals in the waning seconds of the first half to five W&J a 42-20 lead at the break. The Presidents moved their lead to 29 points on a jumper in the paint by Dryburgh with 4:14 to play in the third.

Three-pointers by Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) stretched the W&J lead to 69-35 with 2:19 to play in the third.

A three-point field goal by Alyssa Pollice (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) gave W&J its largest lead of the night at 35 early in the fourth quarter. The Pollice triple made it 75-40 with 7:45 to play. W&J was able to finish off the comfortable 30-point win down the stretch. 

Dryburgh finished with 12 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, four assists and two steals in the victory. Berardelli turned in her best effort of the season, as the junior converted 9-of-13 field goal attempts for a game-high 18 points. She added 11 rebounds to aid W&J's lopsided 52-29 advantage in rebounding. Bezjak finished off a strong week with 14 points more on 5-of-8 shooting (3-of-5 from three-point range). Cherry tallied nine points while Loutsion added eight markers. Pollice chipped in six points on a pair of three pointers off the bench.

W&J made 9-of-20 attempts from three-point range and shot 45.6 percent overall from the field. Franciscan made just 28.1 percent of its attempts from the field. 

W&J returns to action Monday, Feb. 6 when they host Thiel College at 6 p.m.
