Keuka College Women’s Basketball Falls on the Road at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost 66-51 to Utica University on the road in an Empire 8 Conference game.

Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) led Keuka College (3-17, 0-13) with 15 points, hitting five three-pointers. Katie Deatherage (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Marcus Whitman) scored a career-high 13 points and Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Wolves.

The Wolves got out to a fast start on Saturday. After winning the tip, Killian Mahoney made the first shot of the game, hitting a three. Following a Pioneer turnover, Katie Deatherage followed with a three for the early 6-0 lead. Utica got on the board, but Mahoney got her second three of the game to make it 9-4. The home team would cut into the Keuka lead, shrinking the margin to one until Sydney Brown hit a three with two minutes left in the quarter. Utica would close on a 7-0 run to lead 16-13 after one.

Keuka scored the first basket of the second quarter as Sydney Brown found Katie Deatherage for a layup. The Wolves would later take the lead on a Meg McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) layup with another Brown assist as the Green and Gold held the Pioneers off the board for the first two minutes of the quarter. Utica University increased the pressure on the Wolves taking the ball up the court which resulted in a 10-0 run for the home team. A basket for Sydney Brown stopped the run, but Utica would lead by as many as 11 in the half and carry a 34-24 lead into halftime.

For the third time in the game, Keuka made the opening shot of the quarter as Killian Mahoney hit a three for the Wolves. Following a Utica basket, Sydney Brown hit a three to cut the lead to six at 36-30. The Wolves would battle throughout the quarter, but the six-point margin was as close as Keuka would get it. Utica led going into the final quarter.

The Wolves scored first in the fourth quarter, albeit not on their first shot like the previous quarters, but the Pioneers held the Wolves away in the fourth quarter. The Green and Gold would not be able to get the margin down to single digits. Keuka College lost to Utica University 66-51 on Saturday afternoon.

  • Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) posted a game-high seven assists. The senior reached the 100 career assist plateau against the Pioneers
  • Meg McGwin was second on the team with seven rebounds. She surpassed 100 rebounds for the season
  • The Wolves moved the ball well in the offensive end, assisting on 16 of their 19 baskets. Keuka College also won the rebounding battle 42-41
