MC Falls in Conference Battle

LaGRANGE, Ga. – Maryville dropped a conference matchup to LaGrange 70-50 on Friday night. The Scots put up a strong fight in the first and fourth quarter, outscoring the panthers 30-25. They struggled in the middle 20 minutes though, leading to a 45-20 stretch in the second and third.
 
MC has now lost three straight against LaGrange and tonight's 20-point margin represents the largest loss to the Panthers in program history.
 
Courtney Carruthers led the Scots with 12 points, all coming in the first half. Emma Huskey followed with 11 points and nine rebounds, just one board away from her team-high sixth double-double of the season. Madison Williams recorded seven points and nine rebounds as well.
 
Maryville opened up the scoring with a Carruthers jump shot but LaGrange quickly tied it up following a layup from Laila Battle. With 4:13 remaining in the first quarter MC trailed 13-6. In the final four minutes, the Scots outscored the panthers 7-2 and went into the second quarter down just 15-14.
 
In the second quarter, LaGrange took control right away, going on a 17-4 run, that concluded with a 12-0 stretch until Carruthers hit a three-pointer to slow down the damage with 3:02 remaining. The score was 36-24 going into halftime.
 
The Panthers picked up right where they left off, going on an 11-0 run to start the second half. They outscored MC 24-10 during the third quarter while shooting 60 percent (9-for-15) from the field. Kinsee LeFevers scored five of her six points and half of her team's 10 points in the third quarter.
 
Maryville outrebounded LaGrange 42-35 in the contest including a 14-12 advantage on the offensive boards.
 
The Scots travel to Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday looking to rebound against Huntingdon. Tip-off for that game is at 2 p.m. Central.
